耶和华对摩西说：“你晓谕以色列人说：这七月十五日是住棚节，要在耶和华面前守这节七日。第一日当有圣会，什么劳碌的工都不可做。七日内要将火祭献给耶和华。第八日当守圣会，要将火祭献给耶和华。这是严肃会，什么劳碌的工都不可做。“这是耶和华的节期，就是你们要宣告为圣会的节期；要将火祭、燔祭、素祭、祭物，并奠祭，各归各日，献给耶和华。这是在耶和华的安息日以外，又在你们的供物和所许的愿，并甘心献给耶和华的以外。“你们收藏了地的出产，就从七月十五日起，要守耶和华的节七日。第一日为圣安息；第八日也为圣安息。第一日要拿美好树上的果子和棕树上的枝子，与茂密树的枝条并河旁的柳枝，在耶和华你们的神面前欢乐七日。每年七月间，要向耶和华守这节七日。这为你们世世代代永远的定例。你们要住在棚里七日；凡以色列家的人都要住在棚里，好叫你们世世代代知道，我领以色列人出埃及地的时候曾使他们住在棚里。我是耶和华你们的神。” (cunps)

于是以色列众人在七月节前都聚集到王那里。 (cunps)

“你把禾场的谷、酒榨的酒收藏以后，就要守住棚节七日。守节的时候，你和你儿女、仆婢，并住在你城里的利未人，以及寄居的与孤儿寡妇，都要欢乐。在耶和华所选择的地方，你当向耶和华你的神守节七日；因为耶和华你神在你一切的土产上和你手里所办的事上要赐福与你，你就非常地欢乐。 (cunps)

所有来攻击耶路撒冷列国中剩下的人，必年年上来敬拜大君王万军之耶和华，并守住棚节。地上万族中，凡不上耶路撒冷敬拜大君王万军之耶和华的，必无雨降在他们的地上。埃及族若不上来，雨也不降在他们的地上；凡不上来守住棚节的列国人，耶和华也必用这灾攻击他们。这就是埃及的刑罚和那不上来守住棚节之列国的刑罚。 (cunps)

他们见律法上写着，耶和华藉摩西吩咐以色列人要在七月节住棚，并要在各城和耶路撒冷宣传报告说：“你们当上山，将橄榄树、野橄榄树、番石榴树、棕树，和各样茂密树的枝子取来，照着所写的搭棚。”于是百姓出去，取了树枝来，各人在自己的房顶上，或院内，或神殿的院内，或水门的宽阔处，或以法莲门的宽阔处搭棚。从掳到之地归回的全会众就搭棚，住在棚里。从嫩的儿子约书亚的时候直到这日，以色列人没有这样行。于是众人大大喜乐。从头一天直到末一天，以斯拉每日念神的律法书。众人守节七日，第八日照例有严肃会。 (cunps)

节期的末日，就是最大之日，耶稣站着高声说：“人若渴了，可以到我这里来喝。信我的人就如经上所说：‘从他腹中要流出活水的江河来。’”耶稣这话是指着信他之人要受圣灵说的。那时还没有赐下圣灵来，因为耶稣尚未得着荣耀。 (cunps)
