In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah, the Lord moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and also to put it in writing:

It was the first year of the rule of Cyrus. He was king of Persia. The Lord inspired him to send a message all through his kingdom. It happened so that what the Lord had spoken through Jeremiah would come true. The message was written down. It said,

In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and also put it in writing:

In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, the Lord fulfilled the prophecy he had given through Jeremiah. He stirred the heart of Cyrus to put this proclamation in writing and to send it throughout his kingdom:

In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, in order to fulfill the LORD’S message spoken through Jeremiah, the LORD stirred the mind of King Cyrus of Persia. He disseminated a proclamation throughout his entire kingdom, announcing in a written edict the following:

Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that Yahweh’s word by Jeremiah’s mouth might be accomplished, Yahweh stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,

波斯王塞魯士元年，耶和華為了應驗祂藉耶利米所說的話，就感動波斯王塞魯士，使他下詔通告全國：「波斯王塞魯士如此說，『天上的上帝耶和華已把天下萬國都賜給我，祂吩咐我在猶大的耶路撒冷為祂建造殿宇。你們當中凡屬耶和華的子民，都可以去那裡。願你們的上帝耶和華與你們同在！』」

耶和華說：「你們被擄到巴比倫七十年期滿後，我就要眷顧你們，成就我充滿恩典的應許，把你們帶回這地方。

祂使擄掠他們的人憐憫他們。

耶和華掌管君王的心，易如支配壟溝的流水。

七十年後，我要報應巴比倫王和他國民迦勒底人的罪，使他們的土地永遠荒涼。這是耶和華說的。我藉耶利米所說有關列國的預言都記在這書上了，我的話必應驗在他們的土地上。他們必受許多國家和強大君王的奴役，我要按他們的所作所為報應他們。」

然而，巴比倫王塞魯士在其統治元年，降旨重建這座上帝的殿。尼布甲尼撒王曾擄去耶路撒冷上帝殿裡的金銀器皿，放在巴比倫神廟裡，塞魯士王從巴比倫神廟取出這些器皿，交給他委派做省長的設巴薩，吩咐他把這些器皿帶去，重新陳設在耶路撒冷的殿裡，在舊址上重建上帝的殿。

他們歡歡喜喜地守除酵節七天，因為耶和華使亞述王對他們心存善意，幫助他們重建以色列上帝的殿。

我要使被擄的猶大人和以色列人回到故土，重建家園。我要除去他們的一切罪惡，赦免他們的一切罪過。這城要使我在天下萬國面前得到尊崇、頌讚和榮耀。萬民聽見我使這城繁榮昌盛，都恐懼戰慄。』」耶和華說：「你們說猶大的城邑和耶路撒冷的街道一片荒涼、人畜絕跡，但這些地方必傳出歡樂聲、新郎新娘的歡笑聲和在耶和華殿中獻感恩祭者的歌唱聲，『要感謝萬軍之耶和華，因為耶和華是美善的，祂的慈愛永遠長存』。因為我必使被擄的人回到故土，重建家園。這是耶和華說的。」萬軍之耶和華說：「在這一片荒涼、人畜絕跡的地方，在它所有城邑的周圍必再有供牧人放羊的草場。在山區、丘陵和南地的城邑，以及便雅憫、耶路撒冷周圍和猶大的城邑必有人清點羊群。這是耶和華說的。」

以斯拉說：「我們祖先的上帝耶和華當受讚美！因為祂使王有這樣的心意尊崇耶路撒冷耶和華的殿。

尼布甲尼撒在執政第二年做了夢，心裡煩亂，無法入睡，

那時，施洗者約翰來到猶太的曠野傳道，說：「悔改吧，因為天國臨近了！」約翰就是以賽亞先知所說的那位，他說：「有人在曠野大聲呼喊，『預備主的道，修直祂的路。』」

他說：「我就是在曠野大聲呼喊『修直主的路』的那個人，正如以賽亞先知所言。」
