For if the inheritance could be received by keeping the law, then it would not be the result of accepting God’s promise. But God graciously gave it to Abraham as a promise.

For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.

The great gift that God has for us does not depend on the law. If it did, it would no longer depend on the promise. But God gave it to Abraham as a free gift through a promise.

For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise.

For if the inheritance is based on the law, it is no longer based on the promise; but God has graciously given it to Abraham through the promise.

Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s promises because of their faith and endurance.For example, there was God’s promise to Abraham. Since there was no one greater to swear by, God took an oath in his own name, saying:“ I will certainly bless you, and I will multiply your descendants beyond number.”Then Abraham waited patiently, and he received what God had promised.

Clearly, God’s promise to give the whole earth to Abraham and his descendants was based not on his obedience to God’s law, but on a right relationship with God that comes by faith.If God’s promise is only for those who obey the law, then faith is not necessary and the promise is pointless.For the law always brings punishment on those who try to obey it.( The only way to avoid breaking the law is to have no law to break!)So the promise is received by faith. It is given as a free gift. And we are all certain to receive it, whether or not we live according to the law of Moses, if we have faith like Abraham’s. For Abraham is the father of all who believe.

He has been merciful to our ancestors by remembering his sacred covenant—the covenant he swore with an oath to our ancestor Abraham.

Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing unfailing love.Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean!You will show us your faithfulness and unfailing love as you promised to our ancestors Abraham and Jacob long ago.

And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.

For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

you children of his servant Abraham, you descendants of Jacob, his chosen ones.He is the Lord our God. His justice is seen throughout the land.He always stands by his covenant— the commitment he made to a thousand generations.This is the covenant he made with Abraham and the oath he swore to Isaac.He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, and to the people of Israel as a never ending covenant:“ I will give you the land of Canaan as your special possession.”He said this when they were few in number, a tiny group of strangers in Canaan.

God gave the promises to Abraham and his child. And notice that the Scripture doesn’t say“ to his children,” as if it meant many descendants. Rather, it says“ to his child”— and that, of course, means Christ.

For he remembered his sacred promise to his servant Abraham.

But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say,“ Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God’s Book of the Law.”

And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.

This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says,“ It is through obeying the law that a person has life.”

He has helped his servant Israel and remembered to be merciful.For he made this promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and his children forever.”
