那出於女僕的是由肉體生的，那出於自由女人的是藉著應許生的。

然而，那使女所生的是按着血气生的；那自主之妇人所生的，是凭着应许生的。

其由婢生者、循血氣而生、其由自主之婦生者、因應許而生、

然婢女之子、乃因肉情而生；而主婦之子、則憑恩諾而生。

His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a divine promise.

Abraham’s son by the slave woman was born in the usual way. But his son by the free woman was born because of God’s promise.

But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise.

The son of the slave wife was born in a human attempt to bring about the fulfillment of God’s promise. But the son of the freeborn wife was born as God’s own fulfillment of his promise.

But the one by the slave was born as a result of the flesh, while the one by the free woman was born through promise.

But the son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise.

But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise,

Howbeit the son by the handmaid is born after the flesh; but the son by the freewoman is born through promise.

But the one by the slave was born according to the impulse of the flesh, while the one by the free woman was born as the result of a promise.

But he[ who was] of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman[ was] by promise.

同樣因著信，不能生育的撒拉，自己雖然過了年齡，還是領受了懷孕生子的能力，原來她認為向她應許的那一位是信實的。

也不因為是亞伯拉罕的後裔，就都是他的兒女；只有「從以撒生的，才會被稱為你的後裔。」這就是說，肉身的兒女並不是神的兒女，只有應許的兒女才算是後裔。

耶和華照著他所說的眷顧了撒拉，照著他所應許的為撒拉成就了。撒拉懷了孕，到了神對亞伯拉罕說的那個所定時期，在亞伯拉罕年老的時候，為他生了一個兒子。

其中一位說：「明年這時候，我一定回到你這裡。看哪，你的妻子撒拉將會有一個兒子！」當時撒拉正在那人後面的帳篷入口聽著。亞伯拉罕和撒拉都已經老了，上了年紀，撒拉的月事也停止了。撒拉暗笑，心裡說：「我已經衰老，我的丈夫也老了，我還能有這等快樂嗎？」耶和華對亞伯拉罕說：「撒拉為什麼暗笑，說：『我已經老了，真的還能生育嗎？』在耶和華還有難成的事嗎？到了所定的時期，明年這時候，我必回到你這裡；那時撒拉就會有一個兒子。」

不過弟兄們，你們就像以撒一樣，是應許的兒女。但正如那由肉體生的當時逼迫了那由聖靈生的，現在也是這樣。

亞伯拉罕在沒有盼望的時候，仍然懷著盼望去相信，因而成為眾多民族的父，正如先前所說：「你的後裔將要如此眾多。」他快到一百歲的時候，想到自己的身體如同已經死了，又想到撒拉也已經不能生育，但是他的信仰卻沒有軟弱。他也沒有因著不信去懷疑神的應許，反而因著信得以剛強，把榮耀歸給神，並且確信不疑：神所應許的，神也能成就。

神對亞伯拉罕說：「至於你的妻子撒萊，你不要再叫她撒萊，她的名字要叫撒拉。我要祝福她，也要藉著她賜給你一個兒子。我要祝福她，她將成為多國之母，萬族的君王要從她而出。」亞伯拉罕就臉伏於地笑了，心裡說：「難道一百歲的人還能生孩子嗎？就是撒拉也已經九十歲了，還能生育嗎？」亞伯拉罕對神說：「但願以實瑪利活在你面前。」神說：「不，你的妻子撒拉將為你生一個兒子，你要給他起名為以撒。我要與他確立我的約，作為他後裔永遠的約。

然而，這是怎麼說呢？「這話就在你身邊，在你口中，在你心裡。」這就是我們所傳的有關信仰的話語：
