亚伯拉罕从幔利迁往南地，住在加低斯和书珥之间。在基拉耳寄居期间，

就在那天，耶和华跟亚伯兰立约，说：“我必将这片土地赐给你的后代，使他们得到从埃及河到幼发拉底河一带的土地，

对他说：“耶和华说，‘你既然愿意把你的儿子，你的独生子献给我，我凭自己向你起誓，我必赐福给你，使你的后裔多如天上的星和海边的沙。你的后裔必占领仇敌的城池，天下万国必因你的后裔而蒙福，因为你听从了我的话。’”

就是祂与亚伯拉罕所立的约，向以撒所起的誓。

他凭信心像异乡人一样寄居在上帝应许给他的地方。他住在帐篷里，与同受一个应许的以撒和雅各一样。

你起来走遍这片土地，因为我要把这片土地赐给你。”

这些人到死都满怀信心。他们虽然没有得到上帝所应许的，却从远处望见了，就欢喜快乐，承认自己在世上不过是寄居的异乡人。他们抱这样的态度，表明他们正在寻找一个家乡。如果他们想念的是自己离开的家乡，就找机会回去了。然而，他们渴慕的是天上更美的家乡。所以，上帝不以被他们称为上帝为耻，因为祂已经为他们预备了一座城。

耶和华对亚伯兰说：“你要离开家乡、亲族和父亲的家，到我要指示你的地方去。我必使你成为大国，我必赐福给你，使你声名远播。你必成为别人的祝福。

不要因为恶人而烦恼，也不要羡慕作恶之人，因为他们如瞬息枯萎的草芥，又如转眼消逝的绿草。要信靠耶和华，要行善，要在这片土地上安然度日。要以耶和华为乐，祂必成全你的愿望。要把一切交托给耶和华，信靠祂，祂必帮助你，使你的公义如晨光照耀，你的仁义如日中天。

他拥有很多的牛羊和仆婢，非利士人嫉妒他。

我要把你现在寄居的整个迦南赐给你和你的后裔永远作产业，我也必做他们的上帝。”

同样，上帝为要向承受应许的人显明祂的旨意绝不更改，就用誓言向他们保证。

耶和华说：“我要教导你，引领你走正路；我要劝导你，看顾你。

约瑟住在他的埃及主人家中，耶和华与他同在，使他凡事亨通。

“耶和华啊，求你垂听我的祷告，倾听我的呼求，别对我的眼泪视若无睹。因为我在你面前只是客旅，是寄居的，正如我的祖先。

你必按古时给我们列祖的誓言，以信实待雅各，以慈爱待亚伯拉罕。

约瑟坐牢的时候，耶和华与他同在，恩待他，使监狱长赏识他。

以撒在那里耕种，耶和华赐福给他，那一年他得了百倍的收成。

你穿越洪涛，我必与你同在；你渡过江河，必不会被水淹没；你在火中走过，必不会被烧伤，火焰不会烧到你身上。

你们从我身上学习、领受、看到和听到的，都要照着去行。这样，赐平安的上帝就必与你们同在。

不要害怕，因为我与你同在，我必从东方、从西方召集你和你的儿女。
