Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said,“ Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.

She became pregnant again. She had a son. Then she said,“ Now at last my husband will value me. I have had three sons by him.” So the boy was named Levi.

Again she conceived and bore a son, and said,“ Now this time my husband will be attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called Levi.

Then she became pregnant a third time and gave birth to another son. He was named Levi, for she said,“ Surely this time my husband will feel affection for me, since I have given him three sons!”

She conceived again, gave birth to a son, and said,“ At last, my husband will become attached to me because I have borne three sons for him.” Therefore he was named Levi.

And she conceived again and gave birth to a son, and said,“ Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore he was named Levi.

She conceived again and bore a son, and said,“ Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called Levi.

And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have borne him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.

So he stood at the entrance to the camp and said,“ Whoever is for the Lord, come to me.” And all the Levites rallied to him.Then he said to them,“ This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says:‘ Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.’”The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died.Then Moses said,“ You have been set apart to the Lord today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day.” (niv)

“ Simeon and Levi are brothers— their swords are weapons of violence.Let me not enter their council, let me not join their assembly, for they have killed men in their anger and hamstrung oxen as they pleased.Cursed be their anger, so fierce, and their fury, so cruel! I will scatter them in Jacob and disperse them in Israel. (niv)

Bring your fellow Levites from your ancestral tribe to join you and assist you when you and your sons minister before the tent of the covenant law.They are to be responsible to you and are to perform all the duties of the tent, but they must not go near the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar. Otherwise both they and you will die.They are to join you and be responsible for the care of the tent of meeting— all the work at the tent— and no one else may come near where you are. (niv)

Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male. (niv)

About Levi he said:“ Your Thummim and Urim belong to your faithful servant. You tested him at Massah; you contended with him at the waters of Meribah.He said of his father and mother,‘ I have no regard for them.’ He did not recognize his brothers or acknowledge his own children, but he watched over your word and guarded your covenant.He teaches your precepts to Jacob and your law to Israel. He offers incense before you and whole burnt offerings on your altar. (niv)
