第三日，以斯帖穿上朝服，站立在王宮的內院，對着王宮。王在殿裏坐在寶座上，對着殿的門。

掃羅的孫子米非波設也下去迎接王。他自從王離開的那一日，直到王平安回耶路撒冷的日子，沒有修腳，沒有剃鬍鬚，也沒有洗衣服。

末底改知道所發生的這一切事，就撕裂衣服，披麻蒙灰，在城中行走，痛哭哀號。他到了朝門前就停住腳步，因為穿麻衣的不可進朝門。王的諭旨和敕令所到的各省各處，猶太人都極其悲哀，禁食哭泣哀號，許多人躺在麻布和爐灰中。以斯帖王后的宮女和太監來把這事告訴以斯帖，她非常憂愁，就送衣服給末底改穿，要他脫下身上的麻衣，他卻不肯接受。

於是法老急忙召了摩西和亞倫來，說：「我得罪了耶和華－你們的上帝，又得罪了你們。

我因耶和華大大歡喜，我的心因上帝喜樂；因他以拯救為衣給我穿上，以公義為外袍給我披上，好像新郎戴上華冠，又如新娘佩戴首飾。
