就离席站起来，脱了外衣，把毛巾束在腰间，然后倒了一盆水为门徒洗脚，用束在腰间的毛巾擦干。轮到西门·彼得的时候，他说：“主啊！你要洗我的脚吗？”耶稣回答说：“我这样做，你现在虽然不明白，将来一定会明白。”彼得说：“你绝对不可以洗我的脚。”耶稣说：“如果我不洗你的脚，你就和我没有关系了。”西门·彼得说：“主啊，不只我的脚，连我的手和头也帮我洗吧。”耶稣说：“洗过澡的人全身是干净的，只要洗洗脚就好了。你们是干净的，但不是每一个都干净。”因为耶稣知道谁要出卖祂，所以说：“你们不是每一个都干净。”耶稣给门徒洗完了脚，便穿上外衣再次坐下来，然后问道：“我为你们做的，你们明白吗？你们称呼我‘老师’，也称呼我‘主’，你们称呼得对，因为我是。我是你们的老师又是你们的主，尚且给你们洗脚，你们更应当彼此洗脚。我给你们立了一个榜样，好让你们效法我。“我实实在在地告诉你们，奴仆不能大过主人，受差遣的也不能大过差遣他的人。既然你们明白这个道理，如果去实践，就有福了。
