天主所謂：「厭惡斯代、垂四十春」者、又誰耶？非多行不義、卒至暴屍曠野者乎？

神四十年之久，又厌烦谁呢？岂不是那些犯罪、尸首倒在旷野的人吗？

上帝向谁发怒四十年之久呢？岂不是那些犯罪而陈尸在旷野的人吗？

又四十年彼所不悅者誰耶、非干罰而屍仆於野者乎、

上帝於四十載中憾誰、非犯罪而暴骨於野者乎、

天主於四十年間怒誰、非犯罪而屍仆於曠野者乎、

And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?

Who was God angry with for 40 years? Wasn’t it with those who sinned? They died in the desert.

And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it the people who sinned, whose corpses lay in the wilderness?

予茲所欲言者、無非爾所習聞素諳、第欲予爾以警惕耳。在昔主既拯斯民於埃及、厥後其中有狐疑不信者、主乃予以消滅。

且吾不欲兄弟之昧於史訓也。昔吾列祖、悉皆托庇祥雲、行經滄海；祥雲滄海、即若輩共歸摩西之洗禮也。且若輩亦共食同一神糧、共飲同一神水、蓋靈磐常與之偕、若輩得隨時就飲焉。靈磐者何、基督是已。惟當時多數之人、不為天主所悅、卒致橫屍遍野。此事足為吾人炯戒；庶幾吾人毋敢貪戀卑污、如若輩之所為也；毋敢崇拜偶像、如若輩中所為者。經云：『民眾坐而飲食、起而荒嬉、』此之謂也。吾人慎毋犯淫、如若輩中所為者、以致一日之內、二萬三千人同歸於盡。亦毋試主、如若輩中所為者、以致喪命於虺蛇也。亦毋心怨口讟、如若輩中所為者、而被殲於剿討者之手也。凡若輩之種種遭遇、皆足為鑒、載之經籍、所以警我季世之人也。故爾中自以為卓爾有立者、尤宜小心謹慎、時虞殞越耳。爾等所遭遇之試探、固無一而非人性所能忍受者也。且天主至誠無妄、決不容爾受不能忍受之試探；苟有試探、亦必為爾預留出路、使爾必能忍受也。
