The older was named Oholah, and her sister was Oholibah. They were mine and gave birth to sons and daughters. Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem. (niv)

Why do you go about so much, changing your ways? You will be disappointed by Egypt as you were by Assyria.You will also leave that place with your hands on your head, for the Lord has rejected those you trust; you will not be helped by them.“ If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, should he return to her again? Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots and in the great strength of their horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel, or seek help from the Lord.Yet he too is wise and can bring disaster; he does not take back his words. Tiglath- Pileser king of Assyria came to him, but he gave him trouble instead of help.Ahaz took some of the things from the temple of the Lord and from the royal palace and from the officials and presented them to the king of Assyria, but that did not help him.In his time of trouble King Ahaz became even more unfaithful to the Lord. “ This is what the Lord says:“‘ Your wound is incurable, your injury beyond healing.There is no one to plead your cause, no remedy for your sore, no healing for you.All your allies have forgotten you; they care nothing for you. I have struck you as an enemy would and punished you as would the cruel, because your guilt is so great and your sins so many.Why do you cry out over your wound, your pain that has no cure? Because of your great guilt and many sins I have done these things to you. (niv)

“ In those days, at that time,” declares the Lord,“ the people of Israel and the people of Judah together will go in tears to seek the Lord their God.They will ask the way to Zion and turn their faces toward it. They will come and bind themselves to the Lord in an everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten. (niv)

Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you. (niv)

Return, Israel, to the Lord your God. Your sins have been your downfall! (niv)

“‘ Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your naked body. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine. (niv)

Then I will return to my lair until they have borne their guilt and seek my face— in their misery they will earnestly seek me.”“ Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. (niv)

You may say to yourself,“ My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.”But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. (niv)

And you took your embroidered clothes to put on them, and you offered my oil and incense before them. (niv)

“‘ You say,“ We want to be like the nations, like the peoples of the world, who serve wood and stone.” But what you have in mind will never happen. (niv)

“ Return, faithless people; I will cure you of backsliding.”“ Yes, we will come to you, for you are the Lord our God.Surely the idolatrous commotion on the hills and mountains is a deception; surely in the Lord our God is the salvation of Israel.From our youth shameful gods have consumed the fruits of our ancestors’ labor— their flocks and herds, their sons and daughters.Let us lie down in our shame, and let our disgrace cover us. We have sinned against the Lord our God, both we and our ancestors; from our youth till this day we have not obeyed the Lord our God.” (niv)

Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord.Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven, and say:“ We have sinned and rebelled and you have not forgiven. (niv)

“‘ The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of people.’ (niv)

When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you— a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build,houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant— then when you eat and are satisfied,be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
