my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.“ Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.

My people are destroyed because they do not know me.“ You priests have refused to obey me. So I will refuse to accept you as my priests. You have not paid any attention to my law. So I will not let your children be my priests.

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.

My people are being destroyed because they don’t know me. Since you priests refuse to know me, I refuse to recognize you as my priests. Since you have forgotten the laws of your God, I will forget to bless your children.

Desire without knowledge is not good— how much more will hasty feet miss the way! (niv)

Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites, because the Lord has a charge to bring against you who live in the land:“ There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God in the land. (niv)

And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing.The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.For God, who said,“ Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. (niv)

Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; (niv)

For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings. (niv)

You have forgotten God your Savior; you have not remembered the Rock, your fortress. Therefore, though you set out the finest plants and plant imported vines, (niv)

The priests did not ask,‘ Where is the Lord?’ Those who deal with the law did not know me; the leaders rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols. (niv)

When I fed them, they were satisfied; when they were satisfied, they became proud; then they forgot me. (niv)

Israel has forgotten their Maker and built palaces; Judah has fortified many towns. But I will send fire on their cities that will consume their fortresses.” (niv)

“ For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth.But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,” says the Lord Almighty.“ So I have caused you to be despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality in matters of the law.” (niv)

For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach and without the law. (niv)

At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family— from beginning to end.For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God, and he failed to restrain them.Therefore I swore to the house of Eli,‘ The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’”Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, (niv)

Even the stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons, and the dove, the swift and the thrush observe the time of their migration. But my people do not know the requirements of the Lord.“‘ How can you say,“ We are wise, for we have the law of the Lord,” when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely?The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and trapped. Since they have rejected the word of the Lord, what kind of wisdom do they have? (niv)

The ox knows its master, the donkey its owner’s manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand.” (niv)

They forsook all the commands of the Lord their God and made for themselves two idols cast in the shape of calves, and an Asherah pole. They bowed down to all the starry hosts, and they worshiped Baal.They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire. They practiced divination and sought omens and sold themselves to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.So the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them from his presence. Only the tribe of Judah was left,and even Judah did not keep the commands of the Lord their God. They followed the practices Israel had introduced.Therefore the Lord rejected all the people of Israel; he afflicted them and gave them into the hands of plunderers, until he thrust them from his presence. (niv)

“ And now, you priests, this warning is for you.If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honor my name,” says the Lord Almighty,“ I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honor me.“ Because of you I will rebuke your descendants; I will smear on your faces the dung from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it. (niv)

My zeal wears me out, for my enemies ignore your words. (niv)

“‘ These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. (niv)

I wrote for them the many things of my law, but they regarded them as something foreign. (niv)

My people consult a wooden idol, and a diviner’s rod speaks to them. A spirit of prostitution leads them astray; they are unfaithful to their God. (niv)

I chose your ancestor out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in my presence. I also gave your ancestor’s family all the food offerings presented by the Israelites.Why do you scorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed for my dwelling? Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?’“ Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares:‘ I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.’ But now the Lord declares:‘ Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained.The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no one in it will reach old age,and you will see distress in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, no one in your family line will ever reach old age.Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar I will spare only to destroy your sight and sap your strength, and all your descendants will die in the prime of life.“‘ And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign to you— they will both die on the same day.I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his priestly house, and they will minister before my anointed one always.Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread and plead,“ Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat.”’” (niv)

Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard for the Lord. (niv)

He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When the people heard this, they said,“ God forbid!”Jesus looked directly at them and asked,“ Then what is the meaning of that which is written:“‘ The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.” (niv)

When its twigs are dry, they are broken off and women come and make fires with them. For this is a people without understanding; so their Maker has no compassion on them, and their Creator shows them no favor. (niv)

Israel’s watchmen are blind, they all lack knowledge; they are all mute dogs, they cannot bark; they lie around and dream, they love to sleep.They are dogs with mighty appetites; they never have enough. They are shepherds who lack understanding; they all turn to their own way, they seek their own gain.“ Come,” each one cries,“ let me get wine! Let us drink our fill of beer! And tomorrow will be like today, or even far better.” (niv)

I will punish her for the days she burned incense to the Baals; she decked herself with rings and jewelry, and went after her lovers, but me she forgot,” declares the Lord. (niv)

So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.“ What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. (niv)

Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. My people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path. (niv)

But if they do not listen, they will perish by the sword and die without knowledge. (niv)

Though the wicked bind me with ropes, I will not forget your law. (niv)

Lord, do not your eyes look for truth? You struck them, but they felt no pain; you crushed them, but they refused correction. They made their faces harder than stone and refused to repent.I thought,“ These are only the poor; they are foolish, for they do not know the way of the Lord, the requirements of their God. (niv)

Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” (niv)

“ My people are fools; they do not know me. They are senseless children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil; they know not how to do good.” (niv)

In one month I got rid of the three shepherds. The flock detested me, and I grew weary of themand said,“ I will not be your shepherd. Let the dying die, and the perishing perish. Let those who are left eat one another’s flesh.” (niv)

Then the Lord said to me,“ Take again the equipment of a foolish shepherd.For I am going to raise up a shepherd over the land who will not care for the lost, or seek the young, or heal the injured, or feed the healthy, but will eat the meat of the choice sheep, tearing off their hooves.“ Woe to the worthless shepherd, who deserts the flock! May the sword strike his arm and his right eye! May his arm be completely withered, his right eye totally blinded!” (niv)

“ He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,” they replied,“ and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.”Jesus said to them,“ Have you never read in the Scriptures:“‘ The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’“ Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus’ parables, they knew he was talking about them. (niv)

Hear this, you foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear: (niv)

“ Put the trumpet to your lips! An eagle is over the house of the Lord because the people have broken my covenant and rebelled against my law. (niv)

Jesus replied,“ And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?For God said,‘ Honor your father and mother’ and‘ Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is‘ devoted to God,’they are not to‘ honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. (niv)

“ Gather together and come; assemble, you fugitives from the nations. Ignorant are those who carry about idols of wood, who pray to gods that cannot save. (niv)

and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife, (niv)

“ Woe to you, blind guides! You say,‘ If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?You also say,‘ If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it.And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.“ Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices— mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law— justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.“ Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. (niv)

And these also stagger from wine and reel from beer: Priests and prophets stagger from beer and are befuddled with wine; they reel from beer, they stagger when seeing visions, they stumble when rendering decisions. (niv)
