The sinners in Zion are terrified. They tremble with fear. They say,‘ Who of us can live through the Lord’ s destroying fire? Who of us can live through the fire that burns forever?’

Sinners are afraid in Zion; panic grips the godless. They say,‘ Who among us can coexist with destructive fire? Who among us can coexist with unquenchable fire?’

for our“ God is a consuming fire.”

“ Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

“ And they will go out and look on the dead bodies of those who rebelled against me; the worms that eat them will not die, the fire that burns them will not be quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind.”

If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.

And you said,“ The Lord our God has shown us his glory and his majesty, and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a person can live even if God speaks with them.But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us, and we will die if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer.

they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.

“ Then he will say to those on his left,‘ Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

I send him against a godless nation, I dispatch him against a people who anger me, to seize loot and snatch plunder, and to trample them down like mud in the streets.

Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; the rocks are shattered before him.

the Lord Almighty will come with thunder and earthquake and great noise, with windstorm and tempest and flames of a devouring fire.

Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch, her dust into burning sulfur; her land will become blazing pitch!

Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel.

And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

See, the Name of the Lord comes from afar, with burning anger and dense clouds of smoke; his lips are full of wrath, and his tongue is a consuming fire.His breath is like a rushing torrent, rising up to the neck. He shakes the nations in the sieve of destruction; he places in the jaws of the peoples a bit that leads them astray.And you will sing as on the night you celebrate a holy festival; your hearts will rejoice as when people playing pipes go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the Rock of Israel.The Lord will cause people to hear his majestic voice and will make them see his arm coming down with raging anger and consuming fire, with cloudburst, thunderstorm and hail.The voice of the Lord will shatter Assyria; with his rod he will strike them down.Every stroke the Lord lays on them with his punishing club will be to the music of timbrels and harps, as he fights them in battle with the blows of his arm.Topheth has long been prepared; it has been made ready for the king. Its fire pit has been made deep and wide, with an abundance of fire and wood; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of burning sulfur, sets it ablaze.

Our God comes and will not be silent; a fire devours before him, and around him a tempest rages.

Terrors startle him on every side and dog his every step.

Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem.You boast,“ We have entered into a covenant with death, with the realm of the dead we have made an agreement. The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.

In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.So he called to him,‘ Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’“ But Abraham replied,‘ Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

Go now, write it on a tablet for them, inscribe it on a scroll, that for the days to come it may be an everlasting witness.For these are rebellious people, deceitful children, children unwilling to listen to the Lord’s instruction.They say to the seers,“ See no more visions!” and to the prophets,“ Give us no more visions of what is right! Tell us pleasant things, prophesy illusions.Leave this way, get off this path, and stop confronting us with the Holy One of Israel!”

Now the house of David was told,“ Aram has allied itself with Ephraim”; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken, as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.

I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line; hail will sweep away your refuge, the lie, and water will overflow your hiding place.Your covenant with death will be annulled; your agreement with the realm of the dead will not stand. When the overwhelming scourge sweeps by, you will be beaten down by it.As often as it comes it will carry you away; morning after morning, by day and by night, it will sweep through.” The understanding of this message will bring sheer terror.The bed is too short to stretch out on, the blanket too narrow to wrap around you.The Lord will rise up as he did at Mount Perazim, he will rouse himself as in the Valley of Gibeon— to do his work, his strange work, and perform his task, his alien task.Now stop your mocking, or your chains will become heavier; the Lord, the Lord Almighty, has told me of the destruction decreed against the whole land.

They made me jealous by what is no god and angered me with their worthless idols. I will make them envious by those who are not a people; I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding.For a fire will be kindled by my wrath, one that burns down to the realm of the dead below. Tremble, you complacent women; shudder, you daughters who feel secure! Strip off your fine clothes and wrap yourselves in rags.

When you appear for battle, you will burn them up as in a blazing furnace. The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath, and his fire will consume them.

The Lord says:“ These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.

Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.They called to the mountains and the rocks,“ Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”
