They close up their callous hearts, and their mouths speak with arrogance.They have tracked me down, they now surround me, with eyes alert, to throw me to the ground.They are like a lion hungry for prey, like a fierce lion crouching in cover.Rise up, Lord, confront them, bring them down; with your sword rescue me from the wicked. (niv)

The field commander said to them,“ Tell Hezekiah:“‘ This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: On what are you basing this confidence of yours? (niv)

Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble. (niv)

He cannot deliver you from my hand.Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the Lord when he says,‘ The Lord will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’“ Do not listen to Hezekiah. This is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then each of you will eat fruit from your own vine and fig tree and drink water from your own cistern,until I come and take you to a land like your own— a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey. Choose life and not death!“ Do not listen to Hezekiah, for he is misleading you when he says,‘ The Lord will deliver us.’ (niv)

‘ Are not my commanders all kings?’ he says.‘ Has not Kalno fared like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad, and Samaria like Damascus?As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols, kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria—shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?’”When the Lord has finished all his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, he will say,“ I will punish the king of Assyria for the willful pride of his heart and the haughty look in his eyes.For he says:“‘ By the strength of my hand I have done this, and by my wisdom, because I have understanding. Consider Assyria, once a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful branches overshadowing the forest; it towered on high, its top above the thick foliage.The waters nourished it, deep springs made it grow tall; their streams flowed all around its base and sent their channels to all the trees of the field.So it towered higher than all the trees of the field; its boughs increased and its branches grew long, spreading because of abundant waters.All the birds of the sky nested in its boughs, all the animals of the wild gave birth under its branches; all the great nations lived in its shade.It was majestic in beauty, with its spreading boughs, for its roots went down to abundant waters.The cedars in the garden of God could not rival it, nor could the junipers equal its boughs, nor could the plane trees compare with its branches— no tree in the garden of God could match its beauty.I made it beautiful with abundant branches, the envy of all the trees of Eden in the garden of God.“‘ Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because the great cedar towered over the thick foliage, and because it was proud of its height, (niv)

therefore the Lord is about to bring against them the mighty floodwaters of the Euphrates— the king of Assyria with all his pomp. It will overflow all its channels, run over all its banks (niv)

Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel,“ Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me.If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us.”Then the Philistine said,“ This day I defy the armies of Israel!
