You have neither heard nor understood; from of old your ears have not been open. Well do I know how treacherous you are; you were called a rebel from birth.

You have not heard or understood what I said. Your ears have been plugged up for a long time. I knew very well that you would turn against me. From the day you were born, you have refused to obey me.

You have never heard, you have never known, from of old your ear has not been opened. For I knew that you would surely deal treacherously, and that from before birth you were called a rebel.

You did not hear, you do not know, you were not told beforehand. For I know that you are very deceitful; you were labeled a rebel from birth.

Yes, you didn’t hear. Yes, you didn’t know. Yes, from of old your ear was not opened, for I knew that you dealt very treacherously, and were called a transgressor from the womb.

Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies. (niv)

The Lord has brought over you a deep sleep: He has sealed your eyes( the prophets); he has covered your heads( the seers).For you this whole vision is nothing but words sealed in a scroll. And if you give the scroll to someone who can read, and say,“ Read this, please,” they will answer,“ I can’t; it is sealed.” (niv)

Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the Lord.At Horeb you aroused the Lord’s wrath so that he was angry enough to destroy you.When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the Lord had made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water.The Lord gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God. On them were all the commandments the Lord proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.At the end of the forty days and forty nights, the Lord gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant.Then the Lord told me,“ Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have turned away quickly from what I commanded them and have made an idol for themselves.”And the Lord said to me,“ I have seen this people, and they are a stiff-necked people indeed!Let me alone, so that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven. And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.”So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands.When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you.So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.Then once again I fell prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin you had committed, doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger.I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the Lord listened to me.And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too.Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.You also made the Lord angry at Taberah, at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah.And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea, he said,“ Go up and take possession of the land I have given you.” But you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God. You did not trust him or obey him.You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you. (niv)

A dire vision has been shown to me: The traitor betrays, the looter takes loot. Elam, attack! Media, lay siege! I will bring to an end all the groaning she caused. (niv)

He said,“ Go and tell this people:“‘ Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.” (niv)

You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. (niv)

The people of Israel and the people of Judah have been utterly unfaithful to me,” declares the Lord. (niv)

Sacrifice and offering you did not desire— but my ears you have opened— burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. (niv)

Who is blind but my servant, and deaf like the messenger I send? Who is blind like the one in covenant with me, blind like the servant of the Lord?You have seen many things, but you pay no attention; your ears are open, but you do not listen.” (niv)

For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:“ He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn— and I would heal them.” (niv)

Hear this, you foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear: (niv)

To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. The word of the Lord is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it. (niv)

All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. (niv)

“ Remember this, keep it in mind, take it to heart, you rebels. (niv)

Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. (niv)

But like a woman unfaithful to her husband, so you, Israel, have been unfaithful to me,” declares the Lord. (niv)

Lord, your hand is lifted high, but they do not see it. Let them see your zeal for your people and be put to shame; let the fire reserved for your enemies consume them. (niv)

This is why I speak to them in parables:“ Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:“‘ You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’ (niv)

and say,‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Jerusalem: Your ancestry and birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.On the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths.No one looked on you with pity or had compassion enough to do any of these things for you. Rather, you were thrown out into the open field, for on the day you were born you were despised. (niv)

They are unfaithful to the Lord; they give birth to illegitimate children. When they celebrate their New Moon feasts, he will devour their fields. (niv)

For I knew how stubborn you were; your neck muscles were iron, your forehead was bronze. (niv)

As at Adam, they have broken the covenant; they were unfaithful to me there. (niv)

The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears; I have not been rebellious, I have not turned away. (niv)

Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the Lord loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god. (niv)

I thought that after she had done all this she would return to me but she did not, and her unfaithful sister Judah saw it.I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear; she also went out and committed adultery.Because Israel’s immorality mattered so little to her, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stone and wood.In spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return to me with all her heart, but only in pretense,” declares the Lord.The Lord said to me,“ Faithless Israel is more righteous than unfaithful Judah.
