「從前，凡種一千棵葡萄樹、值銀一千舍客勒的地方，到那時必長荊棘和蒺藜。人上那裏去，必帶弓箭，因為遍地滿了荊棘和蒺藜。所有用鋤刨挖的山地，你因怕荊棘和蒺藜，不敢上那裏去；只可成了放牛之處，為羊踐踏之地。」

迦勒底人焚燒神的殿，拆毀耶路撒冷的城牆，用火燒了城裏的宮殿，毀壞了城裏寶貴的器皿。凡脫離刀劍的，迦勒底王都擄到巴比倫去，作他和他子孫的僕婢，直到波斯國興起來。這就應驗耶和華藉耶利米口所說的話：地享受安息；因為地土荒涼便守安息，直滿了七十年。

看哪，耶和華使地空虛，變為荒涼；又翻轉大地，將居民分散。那時百姓怎樣，祭司也怎樣；僕人怎樣，主人也怎樣；婢女怎樣，主母也怎樣；買物的怎樣，賣物的也怎樣；放債的怎樣，借債的也怎樣；取利的怎樣，出利的也怎樣。地必全然空虛，盡都荒涼；因為這話是耶和華說的。

這全地必然荒涼，令人驚駭。這些國民要服事巴比倫王七十年。

你將種子撒在地裏，主必降雨在其上，並使地所出的糧肥美豐盛。到那時，你的牲畜必在寬闊的草場吃草。

你頭上的天要變為銅，腳下的地要變為鐵。耶和華要使那降在你地上的雨變為塵沙，從天臨在你身上，直到你滅亡。

城中只有荒涼；城門拆毀淨盡。

外邦人虛無的神中有能降雨的嗎？天能自降甘霖嗎？耶和華－我們的神啊，能如此的不是你嗎？所以，我們仍要等候你，因為這一切都是你所造的。

若是離棄道理，就不能叫他們重新懊悔了。因為他們把神的兒子重釘十字架，明明地羞辱他。就如一塊田地，吃過屢次下的雨水，生長菜蔬，合乎耕種的人用，就從神得福；若長荊棘和蒺藜，必被廢棄，近於咒詛，結局就是焚燒。

我就說：「主啊，這到幾時為止呢？」他說：直到城邑荒涼，無人居住，房屋空閒無人，地土極其荒涼。並且耶和華將人遷到遠方，在這境內撇下的地土很多。

荊棘蒺藜必長在我百姓的地上，又長在歡樂的城中和一切快樂的房屋上。因為宮殿必被撇下，多民的城必被離棄；山岡望樓永為洞穴，作野驢所喜樂的，為羊羣的草場。

以色列人也必多日獨居，無君王，無首領，無祭祀，無柱像，無以弗得，無家中的神像。

基列寄居的提斯比人以利亞對亞哈說：「我指着所事奉永生耶和華－以色列的神起誓，這幾年我若不禱告，必不降露，不下雨。」

又看見遍地有硫磺，有鹽鹵，有火跡，沒有耕種，沒有出產，連草都不生長－好像耶和華在忿怒中所傾覆的所多瑪、蛾摩拉、押瑪、洗扁一樣－

他們要倒在刀下，又被擄到各國去。耶路撒冷要被外邦人踐踏，直到外邦人的日期滿了。」

所有來攻擊耶路撒冷列國中剩下的人，必年年上來敬拜大君王－萬軍之耶和華，並守住棚節。地上萬族中，凡不上耶路撒冷敬拜大君王－萬軍之耶和華的，必無雨降在他們的地上。

耶和華論到乾旱之災的話臨到耶利米：

你要這樣告訴他，耶和華如此說：我所建立的，我必拆毀；我所栽植的，我必拔出；在全地我都如此行。

在收割的前三月，我使雨停止，不降在你們那裏；我降雨在這城，不降雨在那城；這塊地有雨，那塊地無雨；無雨的就枯乾了。

這二人有權柄，在他們傳道的日子叫天閉塞不下雨；又有權柄叫水變為血，並且能隨時隨意用各樣的災殃攻擊世界。

我要把你們散在列邦中；我也要拔刀追趕你們。你們的地要成為荒場；你們的城邑要變為荒涼。「你們在仇敵之地居住的時候，你們的地荒涼，要享受眾安息；正在那時候，地要歇息，享受安息。地多時為荒場，就要多時歇息；地這樣歇息，是你們住在其上的安息年所不能得的。

我耳聞萬軍之耶和華說：必有許多又大又美的房屋成為荒涼，無人居住。三十畝葡萄園只出一罷特酒；一賀梅珥穀種只結一伊法糧食。
