但是，神揀選了世上愚拙的，為了使有智慧的羞愧；又揀選了世上軟弱的，為了使強壯的羞愧。神也揀選了世上卑賤的，被人厭惡的，以及那一無所有的，為要廢掉那樣樣都有的，使凡血肉之軀的，在神面前，一個也不能自誇。

但有些無賴之輩說：「這人怎麼能救我們呢？」他們就藐視他，不送禮物給他。掃羅卻保持沉默。

亞捫人渡過約旦河去攻打猶大和便雅憫，以及以法蓮家族。以色列的處境非常困苦。

百姓對撒母耳說：「那說『掃羅豈能作我們的王』的是誰呢？把他們交出來，我們好處死他們。」

匠人所丟棄的石頭已成了房角的頭塊石頭。這是耶和華所做的，在我們眼中看為奇妙。

掃羅聽見這些話，就被神的靈催逼，大發怒氣。他把一對牛切成小塊，吩咐使者傳送到以色列全境，說：「凡不出來跟隨掃羅和撒母耳的，就必這樣待他的牛。」耶和華使百姓懼怕，他們就都出來如同一人。

「這摩西就是有人曾棄絕他說『誰立你作我們的領袖和審判官』的，神卻藉那在荊棘中顯現的天使的手差派他作領袖，作解救者。這人領以色列人出來，在埃及地，在紅海，在曠野的四十年間行了奇事神蹟。這人是摩西，就是那曾對以色列人說『神要從你們弟兄中給你們興起一位先知像我』的。這人是那曾在曠野的會眾中和西奈山上，與那對他說話的天使同在，又與我們祖宗同在的，他領受了活潑的聖言傳給我們。我們的祖宗不肯聽從，反棄絕他，他們的心轉向埃及，

亞捫人被召來，在基列安營；以色列人也聚集，在米斯巴安營。基列百姓中的領袖彼此說：「誰領先出去攻打亞捫人，誰就作基列所有居民的領袖。」
