Then the Philistines put themselves in battle array against Israel. And when they joined battle, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men of the army in the field.And when the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said,“ Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and every man fled to his tent. There was a very great slaughter, and there fell of Israel thirty thousand foot soldiers.Also the ark of God was captured; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

So when he had returned the eleven hundred shekels of silver to his mother, his mother said,“ I had wholly dedicated the silver from my hand to the Lord for my son, to make a carved image and a molded image; now therefore, I will return it to you.”

And she bore him a son. He called his name Gershom, for he said,“ I have been a stranger in a foreign land.”

So that He forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, The tent He had placed among men,And delivered His strength into captivity, And His glory into the enemy’s hand.He also gave His people over to the sword, And was furious with His inheritance.

Again the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.

‘ Cursed is the one who makes a carved or molded image, an abomination to the Lord, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’“ And all the people shall answer and say,‘ Amen!’

“ If there is found among you, within any of your gates which the Lord your God gives you, a man or a woman who has been wicked in the sight of the Lord your God, in transgressing His covenant,who has gone and served other gods and worshiped them, either the sun or moon or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded,and it is told you, and you hear of it, then you shall inquire diligently. And if it is indeed true and certain that such an abomination has been committed in Israel,then you shall bring out to your gates that man or woman who has committed that wicked thing, and shall stone to death that man or woman with stones.Whoever is deserving of death shall be put to death on the testimony of two or three witnesses; he shall not be put to death on the testimony of one witness.The hands of the witnesses shall be the first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So you shall put away the evil from among you.

‘ You shall not make idols for yourselves; neither a carved image nor a sacred pillar shall you rear up for yourselves; nor shall you set up an engraved stone in your land, to bow down to it; for I am the Lord your God.

He gave them the lands of the Gentiles, And they inherited the labor of the nations,That they might observe His statutes And keep His laws. Praise the Lord!

For I know that after my death you will become utterly corrupt, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you. And evil will befall you in the latter days, because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger through the work of your hands.”

“ You shall not make for yourself a carved image— any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;

And the Lord said to Moses:“ Behold, you will rest with your fathers; and this people will rise and play the harlot with the gods of the foreigners of the land, where they go to be among them, and they will forsake Me and break My covenant which I have made with them.
