During the reign of King Josiah, the Lord said to me,“ Have you seen what faithless Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every spreading tree and has committed adultery there.I thought that after she had done all this she would return to me but she did not, and her unfaithful sister Judah saw it.I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear; she also went out and committed adultery.Because Israel’s immorality mattered so little to her, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stone and wood.In spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return to me with all her heart, but only in pretense,” declares the Lord.The Lord said to me,“ Faithless Israel is more righteous than unfaithful Judah. He went up to the temple of the Lord with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the Levites— all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord.The king stood by his pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord— to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, and to obey the words of the covenant written in this book.Then he had everyone in Jerusalem and Benjamin pledge themselves to it; the people of Jerusalem did this in accordance with the covenant of God, the God of their ancestors.Josiah removed all the detestable idols from all the territory belonging to the Israelites, and he had all who were present in Israel serve the Lord their God. As long as he lived, they did not fail to follow the Lord, the God of their ancestors. (niv)

Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the Lord. (niv)

They worshiped other godsand followed the practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before them, as well as the practices that the kings of Israel had introduced.The Israelites secretly did things against the Lord their God that were not right. From watchtower to fortified city they built themselves high places in all their towns.They set up sacred stones and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every spreading tree.At every high place they burned incense, as the nations whom the Lord had driven out before them had done. They did wicked things that aroused the Lord’s anger.They worshiped idols, though the Lord had said,“ You shall not do this.”The Lord warned Israel and Judah through all his prophets and seers:“ Turn from your evil ways. Observe my commands and decrees, in accordance with the entire Law that I commanded your ancestors to obey and that I delivered to you through my servants the prophets.”But they would not listen and were as stiff-necked as their ancestors, who did not trust in the Lord their God.They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors and the statutes he had warned them to keep. They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless. They imitated the nations around them although the Lord had ordered them,“ Do not do as they do.”They forsook all the commands of the Lord their God and made for themselves two idols cast in the shape of calves, and an Asherah pole. They bowed down to all the starry hosts, and they worshiped Baal.They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire. They practiced divination and sought omens and sold themselves to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.So the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them from his presence. Only the tribe of Judah was left,and even Judah did not keep the commands of the Lord their God. They followed the practices Israel had introduced.Therefore the Lord rejected all the people of Israel; he afflicted them and gave them into the hands of plunderers, until he thrust them from his presence. (niv)

In addition to all your other detestable practices, you brought foreigners uncircumcised in heart and flesh into my sanctuary, desecrating my temple while you offered me food, fat and blood, and you broke my covenant. (niv)

and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant, (niv)

Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says:‘ Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the Lord. (niv)
