While you were feeling secure I gave you warning. But you said,“ I refuse to listen to you.” That is the way you have acted from your earliest history onward. Indeed, you have never paid attention to me.

I warned you when you felt secure, but you said,‘ I will not listen!’ This has been your way from your youth; you have not obeyed me.

I spoke to you in your prosperity, but you said,‘ I will not listen.’ This has been your way from your youth, that you have not obeyed my voice.

I warned you when you were prosperous, but you replied,‘ Don’t bother me.’ You have been that way since childhood— you simply will not obey me!

I spoke to you when you were secure. You said,“ I will not listen.” This has been your way since youth; indeed, you have never listened to me.

I spoke to you in your prosperity, But you said,‘ I will not hear.’ This has been your manner from your youth, That you did not obey My voice.

I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice.

I spoke to you when you were secure. You said,“ I will not listen.” This has been your way since youth; indeed, you have never listened to Me.

This will happen because the people of Israel and Judah have repeatedly done what displeases me from their earliest history until now and because they have repeatedly made me angry by the things they have done. I, the LORD, affirm it!

Consider this: When I spoke to your ancestors after I brought them out of Egypt, I did not merely give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices.I also explicitly commanded them:“ Obey me. If you do, I will be your God and you will be my people. Live exactly the way I tell you and things will go well with you.”But they did not listen to me or pay any attention to me. They followed the stubborn inclinations of their own wicked hearts. They acted worse and worse instead of better.From the time your ancestors departed the land of Egypt until now, I sent my servants the prophets to you again and again, day after day.But your ancestors did not listen to me nor pay attention to me. They became obstinate and were more wicked than even their own forefathers.’”Then the LORD said to me,“ When you tell them all this, they will not listen to you. When you call out to them, they will not respond to you.So tell them:‘ This is a nation that has not obeyed the LORD their God and has not accepted correction. Faithfulness is nowhere to be found in it. These people do not even profess it anymore.

Let us acknowledge our shame. Let us bear the disgrace that we deserve. For we have sinned against the LORD our God, both we and our ancestors. From earliest times to this very day we have not obeyed the LORD our God.’

They engaged in prostitution in Egypt; in their youth they engaged in prostitution. Their breasts were squeezed there; lovers fondled their virgin nipples there.Oholah was the name of the older and Oholibah the name of her younger sister. They became mine, and gave birth to sons and daughters. Oholah is Samaria and Oholibah is Jerusalem.“ Oholah engaged in prostitution while she was mine. She lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians– warriorsclothed in blue, governors and officials, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding on horses.She bestowed her sexual favors on them; all of them were the choicest young men of Assyria. She defiled herself with all whom she desired– with all their idols.She did not abandon the prostitution she had practiced in Egypt; for in her youth men had sex with her, fondled her virgin breasts, and ravished her.Therefore I handed her over to her lovers, the Assyrians for whom she lusted.They exposed her nakedness, seized her sons and daughters, and killed her with the sword. She became notorious among women, and they executed judgments against her.“ Her sister Oholibah watched this, but she became more corrupt in her lust than her sister had been, and her acts of prostitution were more numerous than those of her sister.She lusted after the Assyrians– governors and officials, warriors in full armor, horsemen riding on horses, all of them desirable young men.I saw that she was defiled; both of them followed the same path.But she increased her prostitution. She saw men carved on the wall, images of the Chaldeans carved in bright red,wearing belts on their waists and flowing turbans on their heads, all of them looking like officers, the image of Babylonians whose native land is Chaldea.When she saw them, she lusted after them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea.The Babylonians crawled into bed with her. They defiled her with their lust; after she was defiled by them, she became disgusted with them.When she lustfully exposed her nakedness, I was disgusted with her, just as I had been disgusted with her sister.Yet she increased her prostitution, remembering the days of her youth when she engaged in prostitution in the land of Egypt.She lusted after their genitals– as large as those of donkeys, and their seminal emission was as strong as that of stallions.This is how you assessed the obscene conduct of your youth, when the Egyptians fondled your nipples and squeezed your young breasts.“ Therefore, Oholibah, this is what the sovereign LORD says: Look here, I am about to stir up against you the lovers with whom you were disgusted; I will bring them against you from every side:the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, Pekod, Shoa, and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them, desirable young men, all of them governors and officials, officers and nobles, all of them riding on horses.They will attack you with weapons, chariots, wagons, and with a huge army; they will array themselves against you on every side with large shields, small shields, and helmets. I will assign them the task of judgment; they will punish you according to their laws.I will direct my jealous anger against you, and they will deal with you in rage. They will cut off your nose and your ears, and your survivors will die by the sword. They will seize your sons and daughters, and your survivors will be consumed by fire.They will strip your clothes off you and take away your beautiful jewelry.So I will put an end to your obscene conduct and your prostitution which you have practiced in the land of Egypt. You will not seek their help or remember Egypt anymore.“ For this is what the sovereign LORD says: Look here, I am about to deliver you over to those whom you hate, to those with whom you were disgusted.They will treat you with hatred, take away all you have labored for, and leave you naked and bare. Your nakedness will be exposed, just as when you engaged in prostitution and obscene conduct.I will do these things to you because you engaged in prostitution with the nations, polluting yourself with their idols.You have followed the ways of your sister, so I will place her cup of judgment in your hand.“ This is what the sovereign LORD says:“ You will drink your sister’s deep and wide cup; you will be scorned and derided, for it holds a great deal.You will be overcome by drunkenness and sorrow. The cup of your sister Samaria is a cup of horror and desolation.You will drain it dry, gnaw its pieces, and tear out your breasts, for I have spoken, declares the sovereign LORD.“ Therefore this is what the sovereign LORD says: Because you have forgotten me and completely disregarded me, you must bear now the punishment for your obscene conduct and prostitution.”The LORD said to me:“ Son of man, are you willing to pronounce judgment on Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare to them their abominable deeds!For they have committed adultery and blood is on their hands. They have committed adultery with their idols, and their sons, whom they bore to me, they have passed through the fire as food to their idols.Moreover, they have done this to me: In the very same day they desecrated my sanctuary and profaned my Sabbaths.On the same day they slaughtered their sons for their idols, they came to my sanctuary to desecrate it. This is what they have done in the middle of my house.

You did not hear, you do not know, you were not told beforehand. For I know that you are very deceitful; you were labeled a rebel from birth.

lest I become satisfied and act deceptively and say,“ Who is the LORD?” Or lest I become poor and steal and demean the name of my God.

I sent all my servants the prophets to warn you over and over again. They said,“ Every one of you, stop doing the evil things you have been doing and do what is right. Do not pay allegiance to other gods and worship them. Then you can continue to live in this land that I gave to you and your ancestors.” But you did not pay any attention or listen to me.

The LORD said to his people:“ You are standing at the crossroads. So consider your path. Ask where the old, reliable paths are. Ask where the path is that leads to blessing and follow it. If you do, you will find rest for your souls.” But they said,“ We will not follow it!”

But they rebelled against me, and refused to listen to me; no one got rid of their detestable idols, nor did they abandon the idols of Egypt. Then I decided to pour out my rage on them and fully vent my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.

The Israelites did evil before the LORD by worshiping the Baals.They abandoned the LORD God of their ancestors who brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods– the gods of the nations who lived around them. They worshiped them and made the LORD angry.They abandoned the LORD and worshiped Baal and the Ashtars.The LORD was furious with Israel and handed them over to robbers who plundered them. He turned them over to their enemies who lived around them. They could not withstand their enemies’ attacks.Whenever they went out to fight, the LORD did them harm, just as he had warned and solemnly vowed he would do. They suffered greatly.The LORD raised up leaders who delivered them from these robbers.But they did not obey their leaders. Instead they prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped them. They quickly turned aside from the path their ancestors had walked. Their ancestors had obeyed the LORD’s commands, but they did not.When the LORD raised up leaders for them, the LORD was with each leader and delivered the people from their enemies while the leader remained alive. The LORD felt sorry for them when they cried out in agony because of what their harsh oppressors did to them.When a leader died, the next generation would again act more wickedly than the previous one. They would follow after other gods, worshiping them and bowing down to them. They did not give up their practices or their stubborn ways.

for I know about your rebellion and stubbornness. Indeed, even while I have been living among you to this very day, you have rebelled against the LORD; you will be even more rebellious after my death!

But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his warnings, and ridiculed his prophets. Finally the LORD got very angry at his people and there was no one who could prevent his judgment.He brought against them the king of the Babylonians, who slaughtered their young men in their temple. He did not spare young men or women, or even the old and aging. God handed everyone over to him.

“ But they– our ancestors– behaved presumptuously; they rebelled and did not obey your commandments.They refused to obey and did not recall your miracles that you had performed among them. Instead, they rebelled and appointed a leader to return to their bondage in Egypt. But you are a God of forgiveness, merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and unfailing in your loyal love. You did not abandon them,even when they made a cast image of a calf for themselves and said,‘ This is your God who brought you up from Egypt,’ or when they committed atrocious blasphemies.“ Due to your great compassion you did not abandon them in the desert. The pillar of cloud did not stop guiding them in the path by day, nor did the pillar of fire stop illuminating for them by night the path on which they should travel.You imparted your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths; you provided water for their thirst.For forty years you sustained them. Even in the desert they never lacked anything. Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.“ You gave them kingdoms and peoples, and you allocated them to every corner of the land. They inherited the land of King Sihon of Heshbon and the land of King Og of Bashan.You multiplied their descendants like the stars of the sky. You brought them to the land you had told their ancestors to enter in order to possess.Their descendants entered and possessed the land. You subdued before them the Canaanites who were the inhabitants of the land. You delivered them into their hand, together with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with as they pleased.They captured fortified cities and fertile land. They took possession of houses full of all sorts of good things– wells previously dug, vineyards, olive trees, and fruit trees in abundance. They ate until they were full and grew fat. They enjoyed to the full your great goodness.“ Nonetheless they grew disobedient and rebelled against you; they disregarded your law. They killed your prophets who had solemnly admonished them in order to cause them to return to you. They committed atrocious blasphemies.Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who oppressed them. But in the time of their distress they called to you, and you heard from heaven. In your abundant compassion you provided them with deliverers to rescue them from their adversaries.“ Then, when they were at rest again, they went back to doing evil before you. Then you abandoned them to their enemies, and they gained dominion over them. When they again cried out to you, in your compassion you heard from heaven and rescued them time and again.And you solemnly admonished them in order to return them to your law, but they behaved presumptuously and did not obey your commandments. They sinned against your ordinances– those by which an individual, if he obeys them, will live. They boldly turned from you; they rebelled and did not obey.You prolonged your kindness with them for many years, and you solemnly admonished them by your Spirit through your prophets. Still they paid no attention, so you delivered them into the hands of the neighboring peoples.However, due to your abundant mercy you did not do away with them altogether; you did not abandon them. For you are a merciful and compassionate God.“ So now, our God– the great, powerful, and awesome God, who keeps covenant fidelity– do not regard as inconsequential all the hardship that has befallen us– our kings, our leaders, our priests, our prophets, our ancestors, and all your people– from the days of the kings of Assyria until this very day!You are righteous with regard to all that has happened to us, for you have acted faithfully. It is we who have been in the wrong!Our kings, our leaders, our priests, and our ancestors have not kept your law. They have not paid attention to your commandments or your testimonies by which you have solemnly admonished them.Even when they were in their kingdom and benefiting from your incredible goodness that you had lavished on them in the spacious and fertile land you had set before them, they did not serve you, nor did they turn from their evil practices.“ So today we are slaves! In the very land you gave to our ancestors to eat its fruit and to enjoy its good things– we are slaves!Its abundant produce goes to the kings you have placed over us due to our sins. They rule over our bodies and our livestock as they see fit, and we are in great distress!

You have been rebelling against him from the very first day I knew you!

The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll. He went and got it from the room of Elishama, the royal secretary. Then he himself read it to the king and all the officials who were standing around him.Since it was the ninth month of the year, the king was sitting in his winter quarters. Nor did they tear their clothes to show any grief or sorrow.The king did not even listen to Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah, who had urged him not to burn the scroll.He also ordered Jerahmeel, who was one of the royal princes, Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest the scribe Baruch and the prophet Jeremiah. However, the LORD hid them.

“‘ But the children rebelled against me, did not follow my statutes, did not observe my regulations by carrying them out( the one who obeys them will live by them), and desecrated my Sabbaths. I decided to pour out my rage on them and fully vent my anger against them in the wilderness.

But Jeshurun became fat and kicked, you got fat, thick, and stuffed! Then he deserted the God who made him, and treated the Rock who saved him with contempt.They made him jealous with other gods, they enraged him with abhorrent idols.They sacrificed to demons, not God, to gods they had not known; to new gods who had recently come along, gods your ancestors had not known about.You have forgotten the Rock who fathered you, and put out of mind the God who gave you birth.But the LORD took note and despised them because his sons and daughters enraged him.He said,“ I will reject them, I will see what will happen to them; for they are a perverse generation, children who show no loyalty.

I brought them to the land which I swore to give them, but whenever they saw any high hill or leafy tree, they offered their sacrifices there and presented the offerings that provoke me to anger. They offered their soothing aroma there and poured out their drink offerings.

Remember– don’t ever forget– how you provoked the LORD your God in the desert; from the time you left the land of Egypt until you came to this place you were constantly rebelling against him.

The LORD confronted Manasseh and his people, but they paid no attention.

You people of this generation, listen to what the LORD says.“ Have I been like a wilderness to you, Israel? Have I been like a dark and dangerous land to you? Why then do you say,‘ We are free to wander. We will not come to you any more?’

But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness; they did not follow my statutes and they rejected my regulations( the one who obeys them will live by them), and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths. So I decided to pour out my rage on them in the wilderness and destroy them.

We have sinned like our ancestors; we have done wrong, we have done evil.Our ancestors in Egypt failed to appreciate your miraculous deeds, they failed to remember your many acts of loyal love, and they rebelled at the sea, by the Red Sea.Yet he delivered them for the sake of his reputation, that he might reveal his power.He shouted at the Red Sea and it dried up; he led them through the deep water as if it were a desert.He delivered them from the power of the one who hated them, and rescued them from the power of the enemy.The water covered their enemies; not even one of them survived.They believed his promises; they sang praises to him.They quickly forgot what he had done; they did not wait for his instructions.In the wilderness they had an insatiable craving for meat; they challenged God in the desert.He granted their request, then struck them with a disease.In the camp they resented Moses, and Aaron, the LORD’s holy priest.The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan; it engulfed the group led by Abiram.Fire burned their group; the flames scorched the wicked.They made an image of a calf at Horeb, and worshiped a metal idol.They traded their majestic God for the image of an ox that eats grass.They rejected the God who delivered them, the one who performed great deeds in Egypt,amazing feats in the land of Ham, mighty acts by the Red Sea.He threatened to destroy them, but Moses, his chosen one, interceded with him and turned back his destructive anger.They rejected the fruitful land; they did not believe his promise.They grumbled in their tents; they did not obey the LORD.So he made a solemn vow that he would make them die in the desert,make their descendants die among the nations, and scatter them among foreign lands.They worshiped Baal of Peor, and ate sacrifices offered to the dead.They made the LORD angry by their actions, and a plague broke out among them.Phinehas took a stand and intervened, and the plague subsided.This brought him a reward, an eternal gift.They made him angry by the waters of Meribah, and Moses suffered because of them,for they aroused his temper, and he spoke rashly.They did not destroy the nations, as the LORD had commanded them to do.They mixed in with the nations and learned their ways.They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them.They sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons.They shed innocent blood– the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan. The land was polluted by bloodshed.They were defiled by their deeds, and unfaithful in their actions.So the LORD was angry with his people and despised the people who belong to him.He handed them over to the nations, and those who hated them ruled over them.Their enemies oppressed them; they were subject to their authority.Many times he delivered them, but they had a rebellious attitude, and degraded themselves by their sin.Yet he took notice of their distress, when he heard their cry for help.He remembered his covenant with them, and relented because of his great loyal love.He caused all their conquerors to have pity on them.Deliver us, O LORD, our God! Gather us from among the nations! Then we will give thanks to your holy name, and boast about your praiseworthy deeds.The LORD God of Israel deserves praise, in the future and forevermore. Let all the people say,“ We agree! Praise the LORD!”
