“ People from many nations will pass by the ruins of this city and say to one another,‘ Why did the Lord destroy such a great city?’

『「必有許多國的人要經過這城，彼此對問說：『永恆主為甚麼這樣罰辦這個大城呢？』

多邦之人經是邑者、將相語曰、耶和華如是待此大邑、何故、

凡鄰國眾庶、經過是邑、互相告語、曰、耶和華罰此大邑、何為至於若斯。

諸國之人、經過是邑、彼此問曰、主何為待此大邑如此、

“ People from many nations will pass by this city and will ask one another,‘ Why has the Lord done such a thing to this great city?’

“ People from many nations will pass by this city. They will ask one another,‘ Why has the Lord done such a thing to this great city?’

“‘ And many nations will pass by this city, and every man will say to his neighbor,“ Why has the Lord dealt thus with this great city?”

“ Many nations will pass by this city and ask one another,‘ Why did the LORD do such a thing to this great city?’

“ Many nations will pass by this city; and they will say to one another,‘ Why has the Lord done this to this great city?’

And many nations will pass by this city; and everyone will say to his neighbor,‘ Why has the Lord done so to this great city?’

And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbor, Wherefore hath Jehovah done thus unto this great city?

“ Many nations will pass by this city and ask one another,‘ Why did the Lord do such a thing to this great city?’

And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this great city?

“‘ People from other nations will pass by this city. They will ask one another,“ Why has the LORD done such a thing to this great city?”

“ Many nations will pass by this city, and they will each ask his neighbor,‘ Why has Yahweh done this to this great city?’

And though this Temple is impressive now, all who pass by will be appalled and will gasp in horror. They will ask,‘ Why did the Lord do such terrible things to this land and to this Temple?’“ And the answer will be,‘ Because his people abandoned the Lord their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and they worshiped other gods instead and bowed down to them. That is why the Lord has brought all these disasters on them.’”

then I will uproot the people from this land that I have given them. I will reject this Temple that I have made holy to honor my name. I will make it an object of mockery and ridicule among the nations.And though this Temple is impressive now, all who pass by will be appalled. They will ask,‘ Why did the Lord do such terrible things to this land and to this Temple?’“ And the answer will be,‘ Because his people abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who brought them out of Egypt, and they worshiped other gods instead and bowed down to them. That is why he has brought all these disasters on them.’”

They will exclaim,‘ The whole land is devastated by sulfur and salt. It is a wasteland with nothing planted and nothing growing, not even a blade of grass. It is like the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord destroyed in his intense anger.’“ And all the surrounding nations will ask,‘ Why has the Lord done this to this land? Why was he so angry?’“ And the answer will be,‘ This happened because the people of the land abandoned the covenant that the Lord, the God of their ancestors, made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.Instead, they turned away to serve and worship gods they had not known before, gods that were not from the Lord.

All who pass by jeer at you. They scoff and insult beautiful Jerusalem, saying,“ Is this the city called‘ Most Beautiful in All the World’ and‘ Joy of All the Earth’?”All your enemies mock you. They scoff and snarl and say,“ We have destroyed her at last! We have long waited for this day, and it is finally here!”But it is the Lord who did just as he planned. He has fulfilled the promises of disaster he made long ago. He has destroyed Jerusalem without mercy. He has caused her enemies to gloat over her and has given them power over her.

“ Lord, you are in the right; but as you see, our faces are covered with shame. This is true of all of us, including the people of Judah and Jerusalem and all Israel, scattered near and far, wherever you have driven us because of our disloyalty to you.

“ When you tell the people all these things, they will ask,‘ Why has the Lord decreed such terrible things against us? What have we done to deserve such treatment? What is our sin against the Lord our God?’

Not a king in all the earth— no one in all the world— would have believed that an enemy could march through the gates of Jerusalem.
