公會中有一位名叫迦瑪列的法利賽人，是個德高望重的律法教師。他站起來，叫人把使徒暫且押到外面，然後說：「以色列人啊，你們應當慎重處置這些人。不久前，有個名叫杜達的人起來自立山頭，吸引了差不多四百個跟隨者，但他被殺之後，那些跟隨者就各奔東西，銷聲匿跡了。後來，又有個加利利人猶大在戶口登記期間鼓動百姓跟隨他造反。他被殺之後，那些跟隨者也煙消雲散了。所以，像現在這種情形，我勸大家還是不要管他們，隨他們去吧。他們的計劃和行為如果是出於人意，終必失敗；但如果是出於上帝，你們不但無法阻止他們，恐怕反而是在抵擋上帝！」

他又說：「不要殺人流血，把他扔在這口井裡吧，不要下手害他。」呂便想救約瑟，把他交回給父親。

就下到王宮，進入書記的房間。房間內坐著所有官長，即書記以利沙瑪、示瑪雅的兒子第萊雅、亞革波的兒子以利拿單、沙番的兒子基瑪利雅和哈拿尼雅的兒子西底迦等人。

約雅敬王便派亞革波的兒子以利拿單率隨從去埃及捉拿他。

猶大對他的眾弟兄說：「我們殺死弟弟、掩蓋罪行有什麼益處呢？不如把他賣給以實瑪利人，不要下手害他，他畢竟是我們的弟弟，我們的骨肉啊！」其他弟兄都贊成他的意見。於是，那些米甸商人經過的時候，他們就把約瑟從井裡拉上來，以二百二十克銀子的價錢把他賣給了以實瑪利人。這些商人把他帶到埃及去了。

「我出賣了清白無辜的人，我犯罪了！」他們說：「那是你自己的事，跟我們有什麼關係？」

彼拉多見再說也無濟於事，反而會引起騷亂，於是拿了一盆水來，在眾人面前洗手，說：「流這義人的血，罪不在我，你們自己負責。」眾人都說：「流祂血的責任由我們和我們的子孫承擔！」

耶和華說話了，你們要留心聽，不可傲慢。趁著你們的上帝耶和華還未使黑暗來臨，你們還未在漆黑的山上絆倒，要把榮耀歸給祂。否則，祂必使你們期望的光明變為幽冥和黑暗。如果你們因為驕傲而不肯聽，我會暗自哭泣、淚流滿面，因為耶和華的子民將要被擄。

惡人虛張聲勢，正直人謹慎行事。
