“ While the Jews are watching, take some large stones with you and bury them in clay in the brick pavement at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace in Tahpanhes.

“ Make sure the Jews are watching you. Then get some large stones. Go to the entrance to Pharaoh’s house in Tahpanhes. Bury the stones in the clay under the brick walkway there.

“ Take in your hands large stones and hide them in the mortar in the pavement that is at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah,

“ While the people of Judah are watching, take some large rocks and bury them under the pavement stones at the entrance of Pharaoh’s palace here in Tahpanhes.

“ Pick up some large stones and set them in the mortar of the brick pavement that is at the opening of Pharaoh’s palace at Tahpanhes. Do this in the sight of the Judean men

“ Take some large stones in your hands and hide them in the mortar in the brick terrace which is at the entrance of Pharaoh’s palace in Tahpanhes, in the sight of some of the Jews;

“ Take large stones in your hand, and hide them in the sight of the men of Judah, in the clay in the brick courtyard which is at the entrance to Pharaoh’s house in Tahpanhes;

Take great stones in thy hand, and hide them in mortar in the brickwork, which is at the entry of Pharaoh’s house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah;

“ Pick up some large stones and set them in the mortar of the brick pavement that is at the opening of Pharaoh’s palace at Tahpanhes. Do this in the sight of the Judean men

Take great stones in thine hand, and hide them in the clay in the brickkiln, which[ is] at the entry of Pharaoh’s house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah;

“ Take some large stones and bury them in the mortar of the clay pavement at the entrance of Pharaoh’s residence here in Tahpanhes. Do it while the people of Judah present there are watching.

“ Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear my words.”Then I went down to the potter’s house, and behold, he was making something on the wheels.When the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.Then Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,“ House of Israel, can’t I do with you as this potter?” says Yahweh.“ Behold, as the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.At the instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it;if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do to them.At the instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they not obey my voice, then I will repent of the good with which I said I would benefit them.“ Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying,‘ Yahweh says:“ Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a plan against you. Everyone return from his evil way now, and amend your ways and your doings.”’But they say,‘ It is in vain; for we will walk after our own plans, and we will each follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.’”

Thus said Yahweh,“ Go, and buy a potter’s earthen container, and take some of the elders of the people, and of the elders of the priests;and go out to the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the gate Harsith, and proclaim there the words that I will tell you.Say,‘ Hear Yahweh’s word, kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem: Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel says,“ Behold, I will bring evil on this place, which whoever hears, his ears will tingle.Because they have forsaken me, and have defiled this place, and have burned incense in it to other gods that they didn’t know, they, their fathers, and the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents,and have built the high places of Baal, to burn their children in the fire for burnt offerings to Baal, which I didn’t command, nor speak, which didn’t even enter into my mind.Therefore, behold, the days come,” says Yahweh,“ that this place will no more be called‘ Topheth’, nor‘ The Valley of the son of Hinnom’, but‘ The valley of Slaughter’.“‘“ I will make the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem void in this place. I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life. I will give their dead bodies to be food for the birds of the sky and for the animals of the earth.I will make this city an astonishment and a hissing. Everyone who passes by it will be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues.I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters. They will each eat the flesh of his friend in the siege and in the distress, with which their enemies, and those who seek their life, will distress them.”’“ Then you shall break the container in the sight of the men who go with you,and shall tell them,‘ Yahweh of Armies says:“ Even so I will break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel, that can’t be made whole again. They will bury in Topheth, until there is no place to bury.This is what I will do to this place,” says Yahweh,“ and to its inhabitants, even making this city as Topheth.The houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, which are defiled, will be as the place of Topheth, even all the houses on whose roofs they have burned incense to all the army of the sky and have poured out drink offerings to other gods.”’”Then Jeremiah came from Topheth, where Yahweh had sent him to prophesy, and he stood in the court of Yahweh’s house, and said to all the people:“ Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel says,‘ Behold, I will bring on this city and on all its towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have made their neck stiff, that they may not hear my words.’”

Yahweh said to me,“ Go, and buy yourself a linen belt, and put it on your waist, and don’t put it in water.”So I bought a belt according to Yahweh’s word, and put it on my waist.Yahweh’s word came to me the second time, saying,“ Take the belt that you have bought, which is on your waist, and arise, go to the Euphrates, and hide it there in a cleft of the rock.”So I went, and hid it by the Euphrates, as Yahweh commanded me.After many days, Yahweh said to me,“ Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take the belt from there, which I commanded you to hide there.”Then I went to the Euphrates, and dug, and took the belt from the place where I had hidden it; and behold, the belt was ruined. It was profitable for nothing.Then Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,“ Yahweh says,‘ In this way I, will ruin the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerusalem.This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, who walk in the stubbornness of their heart, and have gone after other gods to serve them, and to worship them, will even be as this belt, which is profitable for nothing.For as the belt clings to the waist of a man, so I have caused the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to cling to me,’ says Yahweh;‘ that they may be to me for a people, for a name, for praise, and for glory; but they would not hear.’

I have also spoken to the prophets, and I have multiplied visions; and by the ministry of the prophets I have used parables.

At that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the way. Now Ahijah had clad himself with a new garment; and the two of them were alone in the field.Ahijah took the new garment that was on him, and tore it in twelve pieces.He said to Jeroboam,“ Take ten pieces; for Yahweh, the God of Israel, says,‘ Behold, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to you

Draw water for the siege. Strengthen your fortresses. Go into the clay, and tread the mortar. Make the brick kiln strong.

In the year that Tartan came to Ashdod, when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him, and he fought against Ashdod and took it;at that time Yahweh spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying,“ Go, and loosen the sackcloth from off your waist, and take your sandals from off your feet.” He did so, walking naked and barefoot.Yahweh said,“ As my servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and a wonder concerning Egypt and concerning Ethiopia,so the king of Assyria will lead away the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Ethiopia, young and old, naked and barefoot, and with buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.

“ You also, son of man, take a tile, and lay it before yourself, and portray on it a city, even Jerusalem.Lay siege against it, build forts against it, and cast up a mound against it. Also set camps against it and plant battering rams against it all around.Take for yourself an iron pan, and set it for a wall of iron between you and the city. Then set your face toward it. It will be besieged, and you shall lay siege against it. This shall be a sign to the house of Israel.“ Moreover lie on your left side, and lay the iniquity of the house of Israel on it. According to the number of the days that you shall lie on it, you shall bear their iniquity.For I have appointed the years of their iniquity to be to you a number of days, even three hundred ninety days. So you shall bear the iniquity of the house of Israel.“ Again, when you have accomplished these, you shall lie on your right side, and shall bear the iniquity of the house of Judah. I have appointed forty days, each day for a year, to you.You shall set your face toward the siege of Jerusalem, with your arm uncovered; and you shall prophesy against it.Behold, I put ropes on you, and you shall not turn yourself from one side to the other, until you have accomplished the days of your siege.“ Take for yourself also wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and spelt, and put them in one vessel. Make bread of it. According to the number of the days that you will lie on your side, even three hundred ninety days, you shall eat of it.Your food which you shall eat shall be by weight, twenty shekels a day. From time to time you shall eat it.You shall drink water by measure, the sixth part of a hin. From time to time you shall drink.You shall eat it as barley cakes, and you shall bake it in their sight with dung that comes out of man.”Yahweh said,“ Even thus will the children of Israel eat their bread unclean, among the nations where I will drive them.”Then I said,“ Ah Lord Yahweh! Behold, my soul has not been polluted; for from my youth up even until now I have not eaten of that which dies of itself, or is torn of animals. No abominable meat has come into my mouth!”Then he said to me,“ Behold, I have given you cow’s dung for man’s dung, and you shall prepare your bread on it.”Moreover he said to me,“ Son of man, behold, I will break the staff of bread in Jerusalem. They will eat bread by weight, and with fearfulness. They will drink water by measure, and in dismay;that they may lack bread and water, be dismayed one with another, and pine away in their iniquity.“ You, son of man, take a sharp sword. You shall take it as a barber’s razor to yourself, and shall cause it to pass over your head and over your beard. Then take balances to weigh and divide the hair.A third part you shall burn in the fire in the middle of the city, when the days of the siege are fulfilled. You shall take a third part, and strike with the sword around it. A third part you shall scatter to the wind, and I will draw out a sword after them.You shall take of it a few in number, and bind them in the folds of your robe.Of these again you shall take, and cast them into the middle of the fire, and burn them in the fire. From it a fire will come out into all the house of Israel.“ The Lord Yahweh says:‘ This is Jerusalem. I have set her in the middle of the nations, and countries are around her.She has rebelled against my ordinances in doing wickedness more than the nations, and against my statutes more than the countries that are around her; for they have rejected my ordinances, and as for my statutes, they have not walked in them.’“ Therefore the Lord Yahweh says:‘ Because you are more turbulent than the nations that are around you, and have not walked in my statutes, neither have kept my ordinances, neither have followed the ordinances of the nations that are around you;therefore the Lord Yahweh says:‘ Behold, I, even I, am against you; and I will execute judgments among you in the sight of the nations.I will do in you that which I have not done, and which I will not do anything like it any more, because of all your abominations.Therefore the fathers will eat the sons within you, and the sons will eat their fathers. I will execute judgments on you; and I will scatter the whole remnant of you to all the winds.Therefore as I live,’ says the Lord Yahweh,‘ surely, because you have defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable things, and with all your abominations, therefore I will also diminish you. My eye won’t spare, and I will have no pity.A third part of you will die with the pestilence, and they will be consumed with famine within you. A third part will fall by the sword around you. A third part I will scatter to all the winds, and will draw out a sword after them.“‘ Thus my anger will be accomplished, and I will cause my wrath toward them to rest, and I will be comforted. They will know that I, Yahweh, have spoken in my zeal, when I have accomplished my wrath on them.“‘ Moreover I will make you a desolation and a reproach among the nations that are around you, in the sight of all that pass by.So it will be a reproach and a taunt, an instruction and an astonishment, to the nations that are around you, when I execute judgments on you in anger and in wrath, and in wrathful rebukes— I, Yahweh, have spoken it—when I send on them the evil arrows of famine that are for destruction, which I will send to destroy you. I will increase the famine on you, and will break your staff of bread.I will send on you famine and evil animals, and they will bereave you. Pestilence and blood will pass through you. I will bring the sword on you. I, Yahweh, have spoken it.’”

It will be, when you have finished reading this book, that you shall bind a stone to it, and cast it into the middle of the Euphrates.Then you shall say,‘ Thus will Babylon sink, and will not rise again because of the evil that I will bring on her; and they will be weary.’” Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.

A mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying,“ Thus with violence will Babylon, the great city, be thrown down, and will be found no more at all.

and they made their lives bitter with hard service in mortar and in brick, and in all kinds of service in the field, all their service, in which they ruthlessly made them serve.

He brought out the people who were in it, and put them under saws, under iron picks, under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick kiln; and he did so to all the cities of the children of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

“ Therefore, you son of man, prepare your stuff for moving, and move by day in their sight. You shall move from your place to another place in their sight. It may be they will consider, though they are a rebellious house.You shall bring out your stuff by day in their sight, as stuff for moving. You shall go out yourself at evening in their sight, as when men go out into exile.Dig through the wall in their sight, and carry your stuff out that way.In their sight you shall bear it on your shoulder, and carry it out in the dark. You shall cover your face, so that you don’t see the land, for I have set you for a sign to the house of Israel.”I did so as I was commanded. I brought out my stuff by day, as stuff for moving, and in the evening I dug through the wall with my hand. I brought it out in the dark, and bore it on my shoulder in their sight.In the morning, Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,“ Son of man, hasn’t the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said to you,‘ What are you doing?’“ Say to them,‘ The Lord Yahweh says:“ This burden concerns the prince in Jerusalem, and all the house of Israel among whom they are.”’“ Say,‘ I am your sign. As I have done, so will it be done to them. They will go into exile, into captivity.“‘ The prince who is among them will bear on his shoulder in the dark, and will go out. They will dig through the wall to carry things out that way. He will cover his face, because he will not see the land with his eyes.I will also spread my net on him, and he will be taken in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans; yet he will not see it, though he will die there.I will scatter toward every wind all who are around him to help him, and all his bands. I will draw out the sword after them.“‘ They will know that I am Yahweh when I disperse them among the nations, and scatter them through the countries.But I will leave a few men of them from the sword, from the famine, and from the pestilence, that they may declare all their abominations among the nations where they come. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.’”

Coming to us and taking Paul’s belt, he bound his own feet and hands, and said,“ The Holy Spirit says:‘ So the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt, and will deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’”
