Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him,“ Are we also blind?”

Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked,“ What? Are we blind too?”

Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, and said to Him,“ Are we blind also?”

For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.

Then the disciples came and said to him,“ Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”He answered,“ Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up.Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth—you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal?You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?

The Pharisees answered them,“ Have you also been deceived?Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them,“ Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?”They replied,“ Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”

“ Woe to you, blind guides, who say,‘ If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred?And you say,‘ If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it.And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

They answered him,“ You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out.

And the Lord said to him,“ Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.“ But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”One of the lawyers answered him,“ Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.”And he said,“ Woe to you lawyers also! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed.So you are witnesses and you consent to the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs.Therefore also the Wisdom of God said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation,from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things,lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say.
