有一位先知名叫以利亞，是基列的提斯比人。他對亞哈說：「我憑我事奉的以色列的上帝——永活的耶和華起誓，如果我不禱告，這幾年必沒有雨水和甘露。」

他們擁有權能，在傳道期間可以關閉天空使雨不降在地上，又有權使水變成血，並隨時用各樣的災禍擊打世界。

那位造昴星和參星，使幽暗變為黎明，使白晝變為黑夜，召來海水澆在大地上的——祂的名字是耶和華。

祂斥責大海，使大海乾涸；祂使一切河流枯竭。巴珊和迦密的草木凋零，黎巴嫩的鮮花衰殘。

所有生靈都在祂手中，世人的氣息也不例外。

「當你的子民得罪你，你懲罰他們，叫天不降雨時，如果他們向著這殿禱告，承認你的名，並離開罪惡，求你在天上垂聽，赦免你僕人——你以色列子民的罪，教導他們走正道，降下甘霖滋潤你賜給你子民作產業的土地。

挪亞六百歲那年的二月十七日，所有深淵的泉源都裂開了，天上的水閘也打開了，地上傾盆大雨降了四十晝夜。那天，挪亞與他的兒子閃、含和雅弗，還有挪亞的妻子和三個兒媳婦都進了方舟。所有的野獸、牲畜、地上的爬蟲和飛鳥都按種類進入方舟。這些動物都一公一母成對地到挪亞那裡，進入方舟，正如上帝對挪亞的吩咐。耶和華關上了方舟的門。上帝眷顧挪亞及方舟裡的野獸和牲畜，使風吹在大地上，水便開始消退。深淵的泉源和天上的水閘都關閉了，大雨也停了。

以利亞先知和我們一樣同是血肉之軀，他懇切地祈求不要下雨，結果三年半沒有下雨。後來他再禱告求雨，天就降雨，地也長出了莊稼。

事實上，在以利亞先知的時代，天乾旱無雨達三年半之久，遍地有大饑荒。那時，以色列國有許多寡婦，

祂對挪亞說：「世人惡貫滿盈，他們的結局到了。我要把他們跟大地一起毀滅。

你一聲怒叱，眾水便奔逃；你一聲雷鳴，眾水就奔流，漫過山巒，流進山谷，歸到你指定的地方。你為眾水劃定不可逾越的界線，以免大地再遭淹沒。

在列國供奉的偶像中，誰能賜下雨水呢？天能自降甘霖嗎？我們的上帝耶和華啊，難道不是只有你能行這些事嗎？是你賜雨水降甘霖，所以我們仰望你。

看啊，我要使洪水在地上氾濫，毀滅天下。地上一切有氣息的生靈都要滅亡。

否則，耶和華必向你們發怒，使天不下雨、地無出產，以致你們在祂賜給你們的佳美之地上迅速滅亡。
