She treats her young harshly, as if they were not hers; she cares not that her labor was in vain,

Ostriches are mean to their little ones. They treat them as if they did not belong to them. They do not care that their work was useless.

She deals cruelly with her young, as if they were not hers; though her labor be in vain, yet she has no fear,

Has not the Lord Almighty determined that the people’s labor is only fuel for the fire, that the nations exhaust themselves for nothing? (niv)

“ Look, Lord, and consider: Whom have you ever treated like this? Should women eat their offspring, the children they have cared for? Should priest and prophet be killed in the sanctuary of the Lord? (niv)

they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. (niv)

The most gentle and sensitive woman among you— so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot— will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughterthe afterbirth from her womb and the children she bears. For in her dire need she intends to eat them secretly because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of your cities. (niv)
