He said:“ In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry.

He said,“ When I was in trouble, I called out to the Lord. And he answered me. When I was deep in the place of the dead, I called out for help. And you listened to my cry.

saying,“ I called out to the Lord, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice.

He said,“ I cried out to the Lord in my great trouble, and he answered me. I called to you from the land of the dead, and Lord, you heard me!

I called to the LORD in my distress, and he answered me. I cried out for help from deep inside Sheol; you heard my voice.

and he said,“ I called out of my distress to the Lord, And He answered me. I called for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice.

And he said:“ I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction, And He answered me.“ Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice.

And he said, I called by reason of mine affliction unto Jehovah, And he answered me; Out of the belly of Sheol cried I, And thou heardest my voice.

I called to the Lord in my distress, and He answered me. I cried out for help in the belly of Sheol; You heard my voice.

And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I,[ and] thou heardest my voice.

and said,“ I called out to the LORD from my distress, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer.

He said,“ I called because of my affliction to Yahweh. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice.

I call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers me. (niv)

The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me.In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears. (niv)

This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles. (niv)

Lord, you are the God who saves me; day and night I cry out to you.May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry.I am overwhelmed with troubles and my life draws near to death.I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am like one without strength.I am set apart with the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more, who are cut off from your care.You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.Your wrath lies heavily on me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves. (niv)

David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God. (niv)

For great is your love toward me; you have delivered me from the depths, from the realm of the dead. (niv)

For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help. (niv)

And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. (niv)

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. (niv)

The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came over me; I was overcome by distress and sorrow. (niv)

Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer. (niv)

because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay. (niv)

From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. (niv)

In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups, and the flocks and herds and camels as well.He thought,“ If Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape.”Then Jacob prayed,“ O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, Lord, you who said to me,‘ Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children.But you have said,‘ I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.’” (niv)

I cry aloud to the Lord; I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy.I pour out before him my complaint; before him I tell my trouble.When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who watch over my way. In the path where I walk people have hidden a snare for me. (niv)

For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (niv)

You who answer prayer, to you all people will come. (niv)

because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay. (niv)

So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.Then the man said,“ Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied,“ I will not let you go unless you bless me.”The man asked him,“ What is your name?”“ Jacob,” he answered.Then the man said,“ Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” (niv)

The realm of the dead below is all astir to meet you at your coming; it rouses the spirits of the departed to greet you— all those who were leaders in the world; it makes them rise from their thrones— all those who were kings over the nations. (niv)

Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.” (niv)
