I descended to the base of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But You have brought up my life from the pit, Lord my God.

To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit.

I sank down to the bottom of the mountains. I thought I had died and gone down into the grave forever. But you are the Lord my God. You brought my life up from the very edge of the pit of death.

But You, God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction; Men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days. But I will trust in You.

“ What gain is there in my blood, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise You? Will it declare Your faithfulness?

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding,Who set its measurements? Since you know. Or who stretched the measuring line over it?On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone,When the morning stars sang together And all the sons of God shouted for joy?“ Or who enclosed the sea with doors When it went out from the womb, bursting forth;When I made a cloud its garment, And thick darkness its swaddling bands,And I placed boundaries on it And set a bolt and doors,And I said,‘ As far as this point you shall come, but no farther; And here your proud waves shall stop’?

For a fire has flared in My anger, And it burns to the lowest part of Sheol, And devours the earth with its yield, And sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

He stood and caused the earth to shudder; He looked and caused the nations to jump. Yes, the everlasting mountains were shattered, The ancient hills collapsed. His paths are everlasting.

You covered it with the deep sea as with a garment; The waters were standing above the mountains.

The mountains saw You and quaked; The downpour of waters swept by. The deep raised its voice, It lifted high its hands.

He has redeemed my soul from going to the pit, And my life will see the light.’
