To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit.

I sank down to the bottom of the mountains. I thought I had died and gone down into the grave forever. But you are the Lord my God. You brought my life up from the very edge of the pit of death.

“ What profit is there in taking my life, in my descending into the Pit? Can the dust of the grave praise you? Can it declare your loyalty?

“ Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you possess understanding!Who set its measurements– if you know– or who stretched a measuring line across it?On what were its bases set, or who laid its cornerstone–when the morning stars sang in chorus, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?“ Who shut up the sea with doors when it burst forth, coming out of the womb,when I made the storm clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band,when I prescribed its limits, and set in place its bolts and doors,when I said,‘ To here you may come and no farther, here your proud waves will be confined’?

For a fire has been kindled by my anger, and it burns to lowest Sheol; it consumes the earth and its produce, and ignites the foundations of the mountains.

He takes his battle position and shakes the earth; with a mere look he frightens the nations. The ancient mountains disintegrate; the primeval hills are flattened. He travels on the ancient roads.

The watery deep covered it like a garment; the waters reached above the mountains.

When the mountains see you, they shake. The torrential downpour sweeps through. The great deep shouts out; it lifts its hands high.
