To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit.

I sank down to the bottom of the mountains. I thought I had died and gone down into the grave forever. But you are the Lord my God. You brought my life up from the very edge of the pit of death.

“ What will you gain if I die, if I sink into the grave? Can my dust praise you? Can it tell of your faithfulness?

“ Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much.Who determined its dimensions and stretched out the surveying line?What supports its foundations, and who laid its cornerstoneas the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?“ Who kept the sea inside its boundaries as it burst from the womb,and as I clothed it with clouds and wrapped it in thick darkness?For I locked it behind barred gates, limiting its shores.I said,‘ This far and no farther will you come. Here your proud waves must stop!’

For my anger blazes forth like fire and burns to the depths of the grave. It devours the earth and all its crops and ignites the foundations of the mountains.

When he stops, the earth shakes. When he looks, the nations tremble. He shatters the everlasting mountains and levels the eternal hills. He is the Eternal One!

You clothed the earth with floods of water, water that covered even the mountains.
