亚哈听见这些话，就撕裂衣服，禁食，贴身穿着麻布，也睡在麻布上，沮丧地走来走去。耶和华的话临到提斯比人以利亚，说：“亚哈在我面前这样谦卑，你看见了吗？因为他在我面前谦卑，所以在他的日子，我不降这祸；到他儿子的时候，我必降这祸于他的家。”

耶和华对这事改变心意，耶和华说：“这灾可以免了。”

他在人前歌唱说：‘我犯了罪，颠倒是非，却没有受该得的报应。神救赎我的性命免入地府，我的生命也必见光。’

我听见以法莲为自己悲叹说：‘你管教我，我便受管教，我如未驯服的牛犊。求你使我回转，我便回转，因为你是耶和华—我的神。我背离以后就懊悔，受教以后就捶胸；我因担当年轻时的凌辱就抱愧蒙羞。’以法莲是我的爱子吗？是我喜欢的孩子吗？我每逢责备他，仍深顾念他。因此，我的心肠牵挂着他，我必要怜悯他。这是耶和华说的。

你们要撕裂心肠，不要撕裂衣服。归向耶和华—你们的神，因为他有恩惠，有怜悯，不轻易发怒，有丰盛的慈爱，并且会改变心意，不降那灾难。

在审判的时候，尼尼微人要起来定这世代的罪，因为尼尼微人听了约拿所传的就悔改了。看哪，比约拿更大的在这里！”

于是他起来，往他父亲那里去。相离还远，他父亲看见，就动了慈心，跑去拥抱着他，连连亲他。

他就向耶和华祷告，说：“耶和华啊，这不就是我仍在本国的时候所说的吗？我知道你是有恩惠，有怜悯的神，不轻易发怒，有丰盛的慈爱，并且会改变心意，不降那灾难。我就是因为这样，才急速逃往他施去的呀！
