原來耶和華使他們心裡剛硬，跟以色列人作戰，好讓他們遭受無情的毀滅，正如耶和華對摩西的吩咐。

因为耶和华的意思是要使他们心里刚硬，来与以色列人争战，好叫他们尽被杀灭，不蒙怜悯，正如耶和华所吩咐摩西的。

For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

The Lord himself made their people stubborn. He made them go to war against Israel so he could totally destroy them. He wanted to wipe them out. He didn’t show them any mercy. The Lord had commanded Moses to destroy the Canaanites.

For it was the Lord’s doing to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle, in order that they should be devoted to destruction and should receive no mercy but be destroyed, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

For the Lord hardened their hearts and caused them to fight the Israelites. So they were completely destroyed without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

耶和華對摩西說：「你到了埃及，見到法老的時候，務要照我賜給你的能力在法老面前行神蹟。但我要使他的心剛硬，他必不讓百姓離開。

你們的上帝耶和華將把你們附近各族的城邑賜給你們，你們要將裡面有氣息的全部消滅。要遵照你們的上帝耶和華的吩咐，徹底滅絕赫人、亞摩利人、迦南人、比利洗人、希未人和耶布斯人，

你們必須滅絕你們的上帝耶和華交在你們手裡的各族，不可憐憫他們，不可拜他們的神明，因為那樣會使你們陷入網羅。

約書亞攻佔了諸王所有的城池，擒獲諸王。他照耶和華的僕人摩西的吩咐，將諸王全部殺死，毀掉城池。以色列人只燒毀了夏瑣，沒有燒建在山丘上的其他城池。他們殺掉城內所有的居民，一個沒留，擄掠了城內所有的財物和牲畜。耶和華怎樣吩咐祂的僕人摩西，摩西也怎樣吩咐約書亞，約書亞都一一照辦，沒有遺漏任何耶和華吩咐摩西的事。

倘若上帝要顯示祂的烈怒和權能，就儘量容忍那些祂預備要毀滅的器皿，以便在那些祂憐憫並預備賜予榮耀的器皿上彰顯祂豐盛的榮耀，這難道不可以嗎？

我讓你活到現在，是為了向你彰顯我的權能，使我的名傳遍天下。

希實本王西宏卻拒絕我們的請求，因為我們的上帝耶和華使他頑固不化，好讓我們擊敗他，正如今日的情形。

我要使埃及人的心剛硬，他們會緊追不捨，跟著你們走進海底。我要在法老及其大軍、戰車和騎兵身上得到榮耀。

他的父母不知道這事是出於耶和華的旨意，祂要找機會對付非利士人。那時，非利士人統治著以色列。

祂說：「你去告訴以色列人，『你們聽了又聽，卻不明白；看了又看，卻不領悟。』要讓這些人心靈麻木，耳朵發背，眼睛昏花，免得他們眼睛看見，耳朵聽見，心裡明白，回心轉意，就得到醫治。」

耶和華說，『誰願意去引誘亞哈到基列的拉末去送死呢？』眾天軍議論紛紛。後來，有一個靈站出來對耶和華說他願意去。耶和華問他用什麼方法，他說，『我要做謊言之靈，進入他眾先知的口中。』耶和華說，『你必能成功，就這樣做吧。』現在，耶和華已經把謊言之靈放進這些先知口中，耶和華已決意降禍給你。」

先知的話還沒有說完，王就打斷他，說：「住口！誰立你做王的謀士了？你要自取滅亡嗎？」先知停了一下，又說：「我知道上帝已定意要毀滅你，因為你做了這事，不聽我的忠告。」

人若得罪了別人，有上帝為他們調解。但人若得罪了耶和華，誰能為他調解呢？」然而，他們不肯聽從父親的話，因為耶和華決意要殺他們。

王不聽民眾的請求。這事是出於耶和華的旨意，為要應驗祂藉示羅人亞希雅先知對尼八的兒子耶羅波安說的話。
