耶路·巴力的儿子亚比米勒去示剑的舅舅家，对外祖父全家说：

当地首领希未人哈抹的儿子示剑看到她，就抓住她，强行玷污了她。

以色列人把从埃及带出来的约瑟的骸骨葬在示剑，在从前雅各用一百块银子向哈抹的子孙买的那块地里。哈抹是示剑的父亲。后来那块地成了约瑟子孙的产业。

约瑟的哥哥们到示剑放父亲的羊。

罗波安前往示剑，因为以色列人都去了那里，要立他为王。

于是，民众便设立拿弗他利山区加利利境内的基低斯、以法莲山区的示剑和犹大山区的基列·亚巴，即希伯仑作为避难城。

耶罗波安在以法莲山区修建示剑城，住在那里。他后来又去修建毗努伊勒。

地中海，又向北至密米他，然后向东绕到他纳·示罗，到雅挪哈东部，再到亚他绿、拿拉，经耶利哥直到约旦河；又从他普亚往西到加拿河，直到地中海。这就是以法莲的子孙按宗族所分的产业。

约书亚在示剑招聚以色列各支派，然后召来以色列的长老、族长、审判官和官长。他们一同站在上帝面前。

以色列说：“你去看看你哥哥们以及羊群是否平安，然后回来告诉我。”于是，约瑟就从希伯仑谷出发去示剑。
