I trembled inside when I heard this; my lips quivered with fear. My legs gave way beneath me, and I shook in terror. I will wait quietly for the coming day when disaster will strike the people who invade us.

My skin has turned dark, and my bones burn with fever.

But it is God who has wronged me, capturing me in his net.

My life is poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax, melting within me.

I will throw my net over him and capture him in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon and put him on trial for this treason against me.

Who can stand before his fierce anger? Who can survive his burning fury? His rage blazes forth like fire, and the mountains crumble to dust in his presence.

You captured us in your net and laid the burden of slavery on our backs.

For our God is a devouring fire.

May all who hate Jerusalem be turned back in shameful defeat.

For my days disappear like smoke, and my bones burn like red hot coals.My heart is sick, withered like grass, and I have lost my appetite.Because of my groaning, I am reduced to skin and bones.

My heart, my heart— I writhe in pain! My heart pounds within me! I cannot be still. For I have heard the blast of enemy trumpets and the roar of their battle cries.Waves of destruction roll over the land, until it lies in complete desolation. Suddenly my tents are destroyed; in a moment my shelters are crushed.How long must I see the battle flags and hear the trumpets of war?“ My people are foolish and do not know me,” says the Lord.“ They are stupid children who have no understanding. They are clever enough at doing wrong, but they have no idea how to do right!”I looked at the earth, and it was empty and formless. I looked at the heavens, and there was no light.I looked at the mountains and hills, and they trembled and shook.I looked, and all the people were gone. All the birds of the sky had flown away.I looked, and the fertile fields had become a wilderness. The towns lay in ruins, crushed by the Lord’s fierce anger.This is what the Lord says:“ The whole land will be ruined, but I will not destroy it completely.The earth will mourn and the heavens will be draped in black because of my decree against my people. I have made up my mind and will not change it.”At the noise of charioteers and archers, the people flee in terror. They hide in the bushes and run for the mountains. All the towns have been abandoned— not a person remains!

The wicked walk into a net. They fall into a pit.

Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will send many people to catch you in my net and haul you out of the water.

I am dying from grief; my years are shortened by sadness. Sin has drained my strength; I am wasting away from within.

But those who trust in idols, who say,‘ You are our gods,’ will be turned away in shame.

But as they fly about, I will throw my net over them and bring them down like a bird from the sky. I will punish them for all the evil they do.

There among those nations you will find no peace or place to rest. And the Lord will cause your heart to tremble, your eyesight to fail, and your soul to despair.

All the strength of Israel vanishes beneath his fierce anger. The Lord has withdrawn his protection as the enemy attacks. He consumes the whole land of Israel like a raging fire.He bends his bow against his people, as though he were their enemy. His strength is used against them to kill their finest youth. His fury is poured out like fire on beautiful Jerusalem.

Our hearts are sick and weary, and our eyes grow dim with tears.

And so my fury boiled over and fell like fire on the towns of Judah and into the streets of Jerusalem, and they are still a desolate ruin today.

They have roused my jealousy by worshiping things that are not God; they have provoked my anger with their useless idols. Now I will rouse their jealousy through people who are not even a people; I will provoke their anger through the foolish Gentiles.For my anger blazes forth like fire and burns to the depths of the grave. It devours the earth and all its crops and ignites the foundations of the mountains.I will heap disasters upon them and shoot them down with my arrows.I will weaken them with famine, burning fever, and deadly disease. I will send the fangs of wild beasts and poisonous snakes that glide in the dust.Outside, the sword will bring death, and inside, terror will strike both young men and young women, both infants and the aged.

We looked in vain for our allies to come and save us, but we were looking to nations that could not help us.We couldn’t go into the streets without danger to our lives. Our end was near; our days were numbered. We were doomed!Our enemies were swifter than eagles in flight. If we fled to the mountains, they found us. If we hid in the wilderness, they were waiting for us there.Our king— the Lord’s anointed, the very life of our nation— was caught in their snares. We had thought that his shadow would protect us against any nation on earth!

Bring shame and disgrace on those trying to kill me; turn them back and humiliate those who want to harm me.

May those who try to kill me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace.Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said,“ Aha! We’ve got him now!”

“ Look at all their evil deeds, Lord. Punish them, as you have punished me for all my sins. My groans are many, and I am sick at heart.”

in flaming fire, bringing judgment on those who don’t know God and on those who refuse to obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus.
