Rejoice and be glad, Daughter Edom, you who live in the land of Uz. But to you also the cup will be passed; you will be drunk and stripped naked.

People of Edom, be joyful. You who live in the land of Uz, be glad. But the cup of the Lord’ s anger will also be passed to you. Then you will become drunk. Your clothes will be stripped off.

Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, you who dwell in the land of Uz; but to you also the cup shall pass; you shall become drunk and strip yourself bare.

Are you rejoicing in the land of Uz, O people of Edom? But you, too, must drink from the cup of the Lord’s anger. You, too, will be stripped naked in your drunkenness.

So rejoice and be glad, Daughter Edom, you resident of the land of Uz! Yet the cup will pass to you as well; you will get drunk and expose yourself.

In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. (niv)

This is what the Lord says:“ For three sins of Edom, even for four, I will not relent. Because he pursued his brother with a sword and slaughtered the women of the land, because his anger raged continually and his fury flamed unchecked, (niv)

Remember, Lord, what the Edomites did on the day Jerusalem fell.“ Tear it down,” they cried,“ tear it down to its foundations!” (niv)

“ Son of man, because Tyre has said of Jerusalem,‘ Aha! The gate to the nations is broken, and its doors have swung open to me; now that she lies in ruins I will prosper,’ (niv)

and say:‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand against you and make you a desolate waste.I will turn your towns into ruins and you will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the Lord.“‘ Because you harbored an ancient hostility and delivered the Israelites over to the sword at the time of their calamity, the time their punishment reached its climax,therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will give you over to bloodshed and it will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you.I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste and cut off from it all who come and go.I will fill your mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines.I will make you desolate forever; your towns will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord. (niv)

“ This is what the Sovereign Lord says:‘ Because Moab and Seir said,“ Look, Judah has become like all the other nations,” (niv)

Come near, you nations, and listen; pay attention, you peoples! Let the earth hear, and all that is in it, the world, and all that comes out of it!The Lord is angry with all nations; his wrath is on all their armies. He will totally destroy them, he will give them over to slaughter.Their slain will be thrown out, their dead bodies will stink; the mountains will be soaked with their blood.All the stars in the sky will be dissolved and the heavens rolled up like a scroll; all the starry host will fall like withered leaves from the vine, like shriveled figs from the fig tree.My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens; see, it descends in judgment on Edom, the people I have totally destroyed.The sword of the Lord is bathed in blood, it is covered with fat— the blood of lambs and goats, fat from the kidneys of rams. For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah and a great slaughter in the land of Edom.And the wild oxen will fall with them, the bull calves and the great bulls. Their land will be drenched with blood, and the dust will be soaked with fat.For the Lord has a day of vengeance, a year of retribution, to uphold Zion’s cause.Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch, her dust into burning sulfur; her land will become blazing pitch!It will not be quenched night or day; its smoke will rise forever. From generation to generation it will lie desolate; no one will ever pass through it again.The desert owl and screech owl will possess it; the great owl and the raven will nest there. God will stretch out over Edom the measuring line of chaos and the plumb line of desolation.Her nobles will have nothing there to be called a kingdom, all her princes will vanish away.Thorns will overrun her citadels, nettles and brambles her strongholds. She will become a haunt for jackals, a home for owls.Desert creatures will meet with hyenas, and wild goats will bleat to each other; there the night creatures will also lie down and find for themselves places of rest.The owl will nest there and lay eggs, she will hatch them, and care for her young under the shadow of her wings; there also the falcons will gather, each with its mate.Look in the scroll of the Lord and read: None of these will be missing, not one will lack her mate. For it is his mouth that has given the order, and his Spirit will gather them together.He allots their portions; his hand distributes them by measure. They will possess it forever and dwell there from generation to generation. (niv)

Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame; you will be destroyed forever.On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them.You should not gloat over your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble.You should not march through the gates of my people in the day of their disaster, nor gloat over them in their calamity in the day of their disaster, nor seize their wealth in the day of their disaster.You should not wait at the crossroads to cut down their fugitives, nor hand over their survivors in the day of their trouble.“ The day of the Lord is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.Just as you drank on my holy hill, so all the nations will drink continually; they will drink and drink and be as if they had never been. (niv)

With cunning they conspire against your people; they plot against those you cherish.“ Come,” they say,“ let us destroy them as a nation, so that Israel’s name is remembered no more.”With one mind they plot together; they form an alliance against you—the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, of Moab and the Hagrites,Byblos, Ammon and Amalek, Philistia, with the people of Tyre.Even Assyria has joined them to reinforce Lot’s descendants.Do to them as you did to Midian, as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon,who perished at Endor and became like dung on the ground.Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,who said,“ Let us take possession of the pasturelands of God.” (niv)

The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Sovereign Lord says about Edom— We have heard a message from the Lord: An envoy was sent to the nations to say,“ Rise, let us go against her for battle”— (niv)

therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will treat you in accordance with the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them and I will make myself known among them when I judge you.Then you will know that I the Lord have heard all the contemptible things you have said against the mountains of Israel. You said,“ They have been laid waste and have been given over to us to devour.”You boasted against me and spoke against me without restraint, and I heard it.This is what the Sovereign Lord says: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.Because you rejoiced when the inheritance of Israel became desolate, that is how I will treat you. You will be desolate, Mount Seir, you and all of Edom. Then they will know that I am the Lord.’” (niv)

For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you have clapped your hands and stamped your feet, rejoicing with all the malice of your heart against the land of Israel, (niv)

The Lord had humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had promoted wickedness in Judah and had been most unfaithful to the Lord. (niv)

“ This is what the Sovereign Lord says:‘ Because Edom took revenge on Judah and became very guilty by doing so,therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will stretch out my hand against Edom and kill both man and beast. I will lay it waste, and from Teman to Dedan they will fall by the sword.I will take vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom in accordance with my anger and my wrath; they will know my vengeance, declares the Sovereign Lord.’” (niv)

This is what the Lord says:“ If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, why should you go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, but must drink it. (niv)

Pass by naked and in shame, you who live in Shaphir. Those who live in Zaanan will not come out. Beth Ezel is in mourning; it no longer protects you. (niv)

Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson? Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of his strength?“ It is I, proclaiming victory, mighty to save.”Why are your garments red, like those of one treading the winepress?“ I have trodden the winepress alone; from the nations no one was with me. I trampled them in my anger and trod them down in my wrath; their blood spattered my garments, and I stained all my clothing.It was for me the day of vengeance; the year for me to redeem had come.I looked, but there was no one to help, I was appalled that no one gave support; so my own arm achieved salvation for me, and my own wrath sustained me.I trampled the nations in my anger; in my wrath I made them drunk and poured their blood on the ground.” (niv)

You who are young, be happy while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment. (niv)

This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me:“ Take from my hand this cup filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it.When they drink it, they will stagger and go mad because of the sword I will send among them.”So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand and made all the nations to whom he sent me drink it:Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin and an object of horror and scorn, a curse— as they are today;Pharaoh king of Egypt, his attendants, his officials and all his people,and all the foreign people there; all the kings of Uz; all the kings of the Philistines( those of Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the people left at Ashdod);Edom, Moab and Ammon;all the kings of Tyre and Sidon; the kings of the coastlands across the sea;Dedan, Tema, Buz and all who are in distant places;all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the foreign people who live in the wilderness;all the kings of Zimri, Elam and Media;and all the kings of the north, near and far, one after the other— all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. And after all of them, the king of Sheshak will drink it too.“ Then tell them,‘ This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword I will send among you.’But if they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink, tell them,‘ This is what the Lord Almighty says: You must drink it!See, I am beginning to bring disaster on the city that bears my Name, and will you indeed go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword on all who live on the earth, declares the Lord Almighty.’ (niv)

“ I have loved you,” says the Lord.“ But you ask,‘ How have you loved us?’“ Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord.“ Yet I have loved Jacob,but Esau I have hated, and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.”Edom may say,“ Though we have been crushed, we will rebuild the ruins.” But this is what the Lord Almighty says:“ They may build, but I will demolish. They will be called the Wicked Land, a people always under the wrath of the Lord. (niv)
