For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation.

He was a sign from God to the people of Nineveh. In the same way, the Son of Man will be a sign from God to the people of today.

What happened to him was a sign to the people of Nineveh that God had sent him. What happens to the Son of Man will be a sign to these people that he was sent by God.

Now the Lord had appointed a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the fish three days and three nights.

“ Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach the message that I tell you.”So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh according to the Lord’s command. Now Nineveh was an extremely large city, a three-day walk.Jonah set out on the first day of his walk in the city and proclaimed,“ In 40 days Nineveh will be demolished!”The men of Nineveh believed in God. They proclaimed a fast and dressed in sackcloth— from the greatest of them to the least.When word reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his royal robe, put on sackcloth, and sat in ashes.Then he issued a decree in Nineveh: By order of the king and his nobles: No man or beast, herd or flock, is to taste anything at all. They must not eat or drink water.Furthermore, both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth, and everyone must call out earnestly to God. Each must turn from his evil ways and from the violence he is doing.Who knows? God may turn and relent; He may turn from His burning anger so that we will not perish.Then God saw their actions— that they had turned from their evil ways— so God relented from the disaster He had threatened to do to them. And He did not do it.

He also said to them,“ This is what is written: The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day,and repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

For as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah’s proclamation; and look— something greater than Jonah is here!The queen of the south will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and look— something greater than Solomon is here!
