那時，神的靈感動耶何耶大的兒子撒迦利亞祭司，他就站在上面，對百姓說：「神如此說：『你們為何干犯耶和華的誡命，以致不得亨通呢？因為你們離棄耶和華，所以他也離棄你們。』」眾人謀害撒迦利亞，照着王的吩咐，在耶和華殿的院內用石頭打死他。這樣，約阿施王不記念撒迦利亞的父親耶何耶大向自己所施的恩，殺了他的兒子。撒迦利亞臨死的時候說：「願耶和華鑒察伸冤！」

因着信，亞伯獻祭給神比該隱所獻的更美，因此獲得了讚許為義人，神親自悅納了他的禮物。他雖然死了，卻因這信仍舊在說話。

不要像該隱；他是屬那邪惡者，殺了自己的弟弟。為甚麼殺了他呢？因為自己的行為是邪惡的，而弟弟的行為是正直的。

該隱與他弟弟亞伯說話。二人正在田間時，該隱起來攻擊他弟弟亞伯，把他殺了。耶和華對該隱說：「你弟弟亞伯在哪裏？」他說：「我不知道！我豈是看守我弟弟的嗎？」耶和華說：「你做了甚麼事呢？你弟弟血的聲音從地裏向我哀號。現在你必從這地受詛咒，這地開了口，從你手裏接受你弟弟的血。

如此，地上所有義人流的血都歸到你們身上，從義人亞伯的血起，直到你們在聖所和祭壇中間所殺的巴拉加的兒子撒迦利亞的血為止。

大流士王第二年八月，耶和華的話臨到易多的孫子，比利家的兒子撒迦利亞先知，說：

並新約的中保耶穌，以及所灑的血；這血所說的信息比亞伯的血所說的更美。

你要對他們說：『這就是不聽從耶和華－他們神的話、不領受訓誨的國民；誠信已從他們口中消失殆盡了。
