耶和華吩咐摩西說：「你要吩咐以色列人說：婦人若懷孕生男孩，就不潔淨七天，像在月經污穢的期間不潔淨一樣。第八天，要給嬰孩行割禮。婦人產後流血的潔淨，要家居三十三天。她潔淨的日子未滿，不可摸聖物，也不可進入聖所。她若生女孩，就不潔淨兩個七天，像經期中一樣。她產後流血的潔淨，要家居六十六天。「潔淨的日子滿了，無論生兒子或女兒，她要把一隻一歲的羔羊作燔祭，一隻雛鴿或一隻斑鳩作贖罪祭，帶到會幕的門口交給祭司。祭司要把這祭物獻在耶和華面前，為她贖罪。這樣，她就從流血中得潔淨了。這是為生男或生女之婦人的條例。婦人的能力若不足，無法獻一隻羔羊，她就要取兩隻斑鳩或兩隻雛鴿，一隻為燔祭，一隻為贖罪祭。祭司要為她贖罪，她就潔淨了。」
