Do not be overawed when others grow rich, when the splendor of their houses increases;for they will take nothing with them when they die, their splendor will not descend with them.Though while they live they count themselves blessed— and people praise you when you prosper—they will join those who have gone before them, who will never again see the light of life. (niv)

Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you.Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes.Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you. (niv)

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. (niv)

those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches?No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them— (niv)

When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy.Jesus looked at him and said,“ How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” (niv)

But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? (niv)

Then he said to them,“ Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”And he told them this parable:“ The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.He thought to himself,‘ What shall I do? Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria, you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy and say to your husbands,“ Bring us some drinks!”The Sovereign Lord has sworn by his holiness:“ The time will surely come when you will be taken away with hooks, the last of you with fishhooks.You will each go straight out through breaches in the wall, and you will be cast out toward Harmon,” declares the Lord. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills.Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence.From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits.They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance.They say,“ How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?”This is what the wicked are like— always free of care, they go on amassing wealth. (niv)

“ When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. (niv)

Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria, you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come!Go to Kalneh and look at it; go from there to great Hamath, and then go down to Gath in Philistia. Are they better off than your two kingdoms? Is their land larger than yours?You put off the day of disaster and bring near a reign of terror.You lie on beds adorned with ivory and lounge on your couches. You dine on choice lambs and fattened calves.You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments.You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph. (niv)

Why do the wicked live on, growing old and increasing in power?They see their children established around them, their offspring before their eyes.Their homes are safe and free from fear; the rod of God is not on them.Their bulls never fail to breed; their cows calve and do not miscarry.They send forth their children as a flock; their little ones dance about.They sing to the music of timbrel and lyre; they make merry to the sound of the pipe.They spend their years in prosperity and go down to the grave in peace.Yet they say to God,‘ Leave us alone! We have no desire to know your ways.Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What would we gain by praying to him?’ (niv)

“ There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with soresand longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.“ The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.So he called to him,‘ Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’“ But Abraham replied,‘ Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; (niv)

I thought,“ These are only the poor; they are foolish, for they do not know the way of the Lord, the requirements of their God.So I will go to the leaders and speak to them; surely they know the way of the Lord, the requirements of their God.” But with one accord they too had broken off the yoke and torn off the bonds.Therefore a lion from the forest will attack them, a wolf from the desert will ravage them, a leopard will lie in wait near their towns to tear to pieces any who venture out, for their rebellion is great and their backslidings many. (niv)

Give back to her as she has given; pay her back double for what she has done. Pour her a double portion from her own cup.Give her as much torment and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself. In her heart she boasts,‘ I sit enthroned as queen. I am not a widow; I will never mourn.’Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine. She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her. (niv)

‘ The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the Lord Almighty.‘ And in this place I will grant peace,’ declares the Lord Almighty.” (niv)
