But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, descendant of Abraham, my friend—I brought you from the ends of the earth and called you from its farthest corners. I said to you: You are my servant; I have chosen you; I haven’t rejected you.

Yet the LORD had his heart set on your ancestors and loved them. He chose their descendants after them— he chose you out of all the peoples, as it is today.

For you are a holy people belonging to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be his own possession out of all the peoples on the face of the earth.“ The LORD had his heart set on you and chose you, not because you were more numerous than all peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.But because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors, he brought you out with a strong hand and redeemed you from the place of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

And not only that, but Rebekah conceived children through one man, our father Isaac.For though her sons had not been born yet or done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to election might stand—not from works but from the one who calls— she was told, The older will serve the younger.As it is written: I have loved Jacob, but I have hated Esau.

“ Your words against me are harsh,” says the LORD. Yet you ask,“ What have we spoken against you?”You have said,“ It is useless to serve God. What have we gained by keeping his requirements and walking mournfully before the LORD of Armies?

Because he loved your ancestors, he chose their descendants after them and brought you out of Egypt by his presence and great power,

Regarding the gospel, they are enemies for your advantage, but regarding election, they are loved because of the patriarchs,since God’s gracious gifts and calling are irrevocable.

When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance and divided the human race, he set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the people of Israel.But the LORD’s portion is his people, Jacob, his own inheritance.He found him in a desolate land, in a barren, howling wilderness; he surrounded him, cared for him, and protected him as the pupil of his eye.He watches over his nest like an eagle and hovers over his young; he spreads his wings, catches him, and carries him on his feathers.The LORD alone led him, with no help from a foreign god.He made him ride on the heights of the land and eat the produce of the field. He nourished him with honey from the rock and oil from flinty rock,curds from the herd and milk from the flock, with the fat of lambs, rams from Bashan, and goats, with the choicest grains of wheat; you drank wine from the finest grapes.

You have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet you ask,“ How have we wearied him?” When you say,“ Everyone who does what is evil is good in the LORD’s sight, and he is delighted with them, or else where is the God of justice?”

Because you are precious in my sight and honored, and I love you, I will give people in exchange for you and nations instead of your life.

The LORD was standing there beside him, saying,“ I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your offspring the land on which you are lying.Your offspring will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out toward the west, the east, the north, and the south. All the peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.

So he came closer and kissed him. When Isaac smelled his clothes, he blessed him and said: Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed.May God give to you— from the dew of the sky and from the richness of the land— an abundance of grain and new wine.May peoples serve you and nations bow in worship to you. Be master over your relatives; may your mother’s sons bow in worship to you. Those who curse you will be cursed, and those who bless you will be blessed.As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob and Jacob had left the presence of his father Isaac, his brother Esau arrived from his hunting.

“ Since the days of your ancestors, you have turned from my statutes; you have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of Armies. Yet you ask,“ How can we return?”“ Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing me!”“ How do we rob you?” you ask.“ By not making the payments of the tenth and the contributions.

May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you so that you become an assembly of peoples.May God give you and your offspring the blessing of Abraham so that you may possess the land where you live as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.”

Evil generation, pay attention to the word of the LORD! Have I been a wilderness to Israel or a land of dense darkness? Why do my people claim,“ We will go where we want; we will no longer come to you”?

He said to me,‘ I will make you fruitful and numerous; I will make many nations come from you, and I will give this land as a permanent possession to your future descendants.’

This is what the LORD says: What fault did your ancestors find in me that they went so far from me, followed worthless idols, and became worthless themselves?

“ A son honors his father, and a servant his master. But if I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is your fear of me? says the LORD of Armies to you priests, who despise my name.” Yet you ask,“ How have we despised your name?”“ By presenting defiled food on my altar.”“ How have we defiled you?” you ask. When you say,“ The LORD’s table is contemptible.”

Isaac began to tremble uncontrollably.“ Who was it then,” he said,“ who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it all before you came in, and I blessed him. Indeed, he will be blessed!”

And the LORD said to her: Two nations are in your womb; two peoples will come from you and be separated. One people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.

“ Your name will no longer be Jacob,” he said.“ It will be Israel because you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed.”Then Jacob asked him,“ Please tell me your name.” But he answered,“ Why do you ask my name?” And he blessed him there.Jacob then named the place Peniel,“ For I have seen God face to face,” he said,“ yet my life has been spared.”

But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus,“ And who is my neighbor?”
