  • 1 Kings 22 2-1 Kings 22 50
In the third year, Jehoshaphat the king of Judah came down to the king of Israel. Now the king of Israel said to his servants,“ Are you aware that Ramoth gilead belongs to us, yet we are hesitant to take it out of the hand of the king of Aram?”So he said to Jehoshaphat,“ Will you go to battle with me at Ramoth gilead?” And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel,“ Consider me yours, my people yours, and my horses yours!”However, Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel,“ Please request the word of the Lord first.”So the king of Israel assembled the prophets, about four hundred men, and said to them,“ Should I go to battle against Ramoth gilead or should I refrain?” And they said,“ Go up, for the Lord will hand it over to the king.”But Jehoshaphat said,“ Is there no longer a prophet of the Lord here, that we may inquire of him?”And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,“ There is still one man by whom we may inquire of the Lord, but I hate him, because he does not prophesy anything good regarding me, but only bad. He is Micaiah the son of Imlah.” But Jehoshaphat said,“ May the king not say so.”Then the king of Israel summoned an officer and said,“ Bring Micaiah son of Imlah quickly.”Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah were sitting, each on his throne, dressed in their robes, at the threshing floor at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them. Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made horns of iron for himself and said,“ This is what the Lord says:‘ With these you will gore the Arameans until they are destroyed!’ ”All the prophets were prophesying this as well, saying,“ Go up to Ramoth gilead and succeed, for the Lord will hand it over to the king.”Then the messenger who went to summon Micaiah spoke to him saying,“ Behold now, the words of the prophets are unanimously favorable to the king. Please let your word be like the word of one of them, and speak favorably.”But Micaiah said,“ As the Lord lives, whatever the Lord says to me, I shall speak it.”When he came to the king, the king said to him,“ Micaiah, should we go to battle against Ramoth gilead, or should we refrain?” And he said,“ Go up and succeed, for the Lord will hand it over to the king!”Then the king said to him,“ How many times must I make you swear that you will tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the Lord?”So he said,“ I saw all Israel Scattered on the mountains, Like sheep that have no shepherd. And the Lord said,‘ These people have no master. Each of them is to return to his house in peace.’ ”Then the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,“ Did I not tell you that he would not prophesy anything good regarding me, but only bad?”And Micaiah said,“ Therefore, hear the word of the Lord. I saw the Lord sitting on His throne, and all the angels of heaven standing by Him on His right and on His left. And the Lord said,‘ Who will entice Ahab to go up and fall at Ramoth gilead?’ And one spirit said this, while another said that. Then a spirit came forward and stood before the Lord, and said,‘ I will entice him.’And the Lord said to him,‘ How?’ And he said,‘ I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.’ Then He said,‘ You shall entice him, and you will also prevail. Go and do so.’Now then, behold, the Lord has put a deceiving spirit in the mouth of all these prophets of yours; and the Lord has declared disaster against you.”Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah approached and struck Micaiah on the cheek; and he said,“ How did the Spirit of the Lord pass from me to speak to you?”And Micaiah said,“ Behold, you are going to see how on that day when you go from one inner room to another trying to hide yourself.”Then the king of Israel said,“ Take Micaiah and return him to Amon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king’s son;and say,‘ This is what the king says:“ Put this man in prison, and feed him enough bread and water to survive until I return safely.” ’ ”But Micaiah said,“ If you actually return safely, the Lord has not spoken by me.” And he said,“ Listen, all you people!”So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up against Ramoth gilead. And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,“ I will disguise myself and go into the battle, but you put on your robes.” So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into the battle. Now the king of Aram had commanded the thirty two commanders of his chariots, saying,“ Do not fight with the small or great, but only with the king of Israel.”So when the commanders of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said,“ Surely he is the king of Israel!” And they turned aside to fight against him, and Jehoshaphat cried out. Then, when the commanders of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, they turned back from pursuing him.Now one man drew his bow at random and struck the king of Israel in a joint of the armor. So he said to the driver of his chariot,“ Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am severely wounded.”The battle raged on that day, and the king was propped up in his chariot in front of the Arameans, and he died at evening, and the blood from the wound ran into the bottom of the chariot. Then the word passed throughout the army close to sunset, saying,“ Every man to his city, and every man to his country!”So the king died and was brought to Samaria, and they buried the king in Samaria. They washed out the chariot by the pool of Samaria, and the dogs licked up his blood( it was there that the prostitutes bathed themselves) in accordance with the word of the Lord which He had spoken. Now as for the rest of the acts of Ahab and everything that he did, and the ivory house which he built and all the cities which he built, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? So Ahab lay down with his fathers, and his son Ahaziah became king in his place. Now Jehoshaphat the son of Asa became king over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel.Jehoshaphat was thirty five years old when he became king, and he reigned for twenty five years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. He walked entirely in the way of his father Asa; he did not turn aside from it, doing what was right in the sight of the Lord. However, the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.Jehoshaphat also made peace with the king of Israel. Now as for the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, and his might which he showed and how he made war, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? And the remnant of the cult prostitutes who remained in the days of his father Asa, he eliminated from the land. Now there was no king in Edom; a governor served as king.Jehoshaphat built ships of Tarshish to go to Ophir for gold, but they did not go, because the ships were destroyed at Ezion geber. Then Ahaziah the son of Ahab said to Jehoshaphat,“ Let my servants go with your servants in the ships.” But Jehoshaphat was not willing. And Jehoshaphat lay down with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of his father David, and his son Jehoram became king in his place.

  • 2 Chronicles 17 1-2 Chronicles 17 19
His son Jehoshaphat then became king in his place, and he proved himself strong over Israel. He placed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah, and placed garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim which his father Asa had captured. And the Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the example of his father David’s earlier days and did not seek the Baals, but sought the God of his father, followed His commandments, and did not act as Israel did.So the Lord established the kingdom in his control, and all Judah gave tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had great riches and honor. He took great pride in the ways of the Lord, and again removed the high places and the Asherim from Judah. Then in the third year of his reign he sent his officials, Ben hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah;and with them the Levites, Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah, the Levites; and with them the priests Elishama and Jehoram. They taught in Judah, having the Book of the Law of the Lord with them; and they went throughout the cities of Judah and taught among the people. Now the dread of the Lord was on all the kingdoms of the lands which were around Judah, so that they did not make war against Jehoshaphat. Some of the Philistines brought gifts and silver as tribute to Jehoshaphat; the Arabians also brought him flocks, 7,700 rams and 7,700 male goats. So Jehoshaphat grew greater and greater, and he built fortresses and storage cities in Judah. He had large supplies in the cities of Judah, and warriors, valiant mighty men, in Jerusalem. This was their muster according to their fathers’ households: of Judah, commanders of thousands, Adnah was the commander, and with him three hundred thousand valiant warriors;and next to him was Johanan the commander, and with him 280,000;and next to him Amasiah the son of Zichri, who volunteered for the Lord, and with him two hundred thousand valiant warriors;and of Benjamin, Eliada, a valiant warrior, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield;and next to him Jehozabad, and with him 180,000 equipped for war. These are the ones who served the king, apart from those whom the king put in the fortified cities throughout Judah.

Then Jehoshaphat lay down with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David, and his son Jehoram became king in his place.
  • 2 Chronicles 26 1-2 Chronicles 26 23
Now all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah. He built Eloth and restored it to Judah after the king lay down with his fathers.Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned for fifty two years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Jechiliah of Jerusalem. He did what was right in the sight of the Lord, in accordance with everything that his father Amaziah had done.He continued to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding through the vision of God; and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him successful. Now he went out and fought against the Philistines, and broke down the wall of Gath, the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of Ashdod; and he built cities in the area of Ashdod and among the Philistines.God helped him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians who lived in Gur baal, and the Meunites. The Ammonites gave tribute to Uzziah, and his fame extended to the border of Egypt, for he became very strong. Moreover, Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate, the Valley Gate, and at the corner buttress, and he fortified them.He also built towers in the wilderness and carved out many cisterns, for he had much livestock, both in the lowland and in the plain. He also had plowmen and vinedressers in the hill country and the fertile fields, for he loved the soil. Moreover, Uzziah had an army ready for battle, which entered combat by divisions according to the number of their muster, recorded by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the official, under the direction of Hananiah, one of the king’s officers. The total number of the heads of the households, of valiant warriors, was 2,600.Under their direction was an army of 307,500, who could wage war with great power, to help the king against the enemy. Moreover, Uzziah prepared for all the army shields, spears, helmets, body armor, bows, and slingstones. In Jerusalem he made machines of war invented by skillful workmen to be on the towers and the corners, for the purpose of shooting arrows and great stones. So his fame spread far, for he was marvelously helped until he was strong. But when he became strong, his heart was so proud that he acted corruptly, and he was untrue to the Lord his God, for he entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense. Then Azariah the priest entered after him, and with him eighty priests of the Lord, valiant men. They opposed Uzziah the king and said to him,“ It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron who have been consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have been untrue and will have no honor from the Lord God.”But Uzziah, with a censer in his hand for burning incense, was enraged; and while he was enraged with the priests, leprosy broke out on his forehead in the presence of the priests in the house of the Lord, beside the altar of incense.Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked at him, and behold, he was leprous on his forehead; and they quickly removed him from there, and he himself also hurried to get out because the Lord had stricken him.King Uzziah had leprosy to the day of his death; and he lived in a separate house, afflicted as he was with leprosy, for he was cut off from the house of the Lord. And his son Jotham was over the king’s house, judging the people of the land. Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, the first to the last, the prophet Isaiah, the son of Amoz, has written. So Uzziah lay down with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the field of the grave which belonged to the kings, for they said,“ He had leprosy.” And his son Jotham became king in his place.
  • 1 Kings 15 24
And Asa lay down with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of his father David; and his son Jehoshaphat reigned in his place.
  • 2 Kings 15 1-2 Kings 15 6
In the twenty seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Azariah son of Amaziah king of Judah became king.He was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned for fifty two years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Jecoliah of Jerusalem. He did what was right in the sight of the Lord, in accordance with everything that his father Amaziah had done.Only the high places were not eliminated; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. And the Lord afflicted the king, so that he had leprosy to the day of his death. And he lived in a separate house, while Jotham the king’s son was in charge of the household, judging the people of the land. Now as for the rest of the acts of Azariah and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
