At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So they asked him,“ You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” He denied it, saying,“ I am not.”One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him,“ Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow. He said:“ In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry.You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me.I said,‘ I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit.“ When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. (niv)

The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came over me; I was overcome by distress and sorrow.Then I called on the name of the Lord:“ Lord, save me!” (niv)

Peter followed at a distance.And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them.A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said,“ This man was with him.”But he denied it.“ Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.A little later someone else saw him and said,“ You also are one of them.”“ Man, I am not!” Peter replied.About an hour later another asserted,“ Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”Peter replied,“ Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him:“ Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” (niv)

Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.The disciples went and woke him, saying,“ Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” (niv)

While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by.When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him.“ You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,” she said.But he denied it.“ I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” he said, and went out into the entryway.When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around,“ This fellow is one of them.”Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter,“ Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”He began to call down curses, and he swore to them,“ I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him:“ Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept. (niv)

Arise, Lord! Deliver me, my God! Strike all my enemies on the jaw; break the teeth of the wicked. (niv)

When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city.“ Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked. (niv)

Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.But he said to me,“ My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him.“ You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.But he denied it before them all.“ I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there,“ This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”He denied it again, with an oath:“ I don’t know the man!”After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said,“ Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them,“ I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed.Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken:“ Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. (niv)

They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits’ end.Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. (niv)

Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck.I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me. (niv)
