The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted

The king was very upset. But he thought of his promise and his dinner guests. So he told one of his men to give her what she asked for.

Then the king regretted what he had said; but because of the vow he had made in front of his guests, he issued the necessary orders.

Although the king regretted it, he commanded that it be granted because of his oaths and his guests.

And although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths and his dinner guests.

And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her.

and he said,“ May God do so to me and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders today.”Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Now the king had dispatched a man from his presence, but before the messenger arrived Elisha said to the elders,“ Do you see how this murderer has sent to take off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door and hold the door fast against him. Is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?”And while he was still speaking with them, the messenger came down to him and said,“ This trouble is from the Lord! Why should I wait for the Lord any longer?”

God do so to the enemies of David and more also, if by morning I leave so much as one male of all who belong to him.”

But if her father opposes her on the day that he hears of it, no vow of hers, no pledge by which she has bound herself shall stand. But Saul swore to her by the Lord,“ As the Lord lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.”

And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.

For as the Lord lives who saves Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people who answered him.Then he said to all Israel,“ You shall be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.” And the people said to Saul,“ Do what seems good to you.”Therefore Saul said,“ O Lord God of Israel, why have you not answered your servant this day? If this guilt is in me or in Jonathan my son, O Lord, God of Israel, give Urim. But if this guilt is in your people Israel, give Thummim.” And Jonathan and Saul were taken, but the people escaped.Then Saul said,“ Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan.” And Jonathan was taken.Then Saul said to Jonathan,“ Tell me what you have done.” And Jonathan told him,“ I tasted a little honey with the tip of the staff that was in my hand. Here I am; I will die.”And Saul said,“ God do so to me and more also; you shall surely die, Jonathan.”Then the people said to Saul,“ Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As the Lord lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.” So the people ransomed Jonathan, so that he did not die.

asking as a favor against Paul that he summon him to Jerusalem— because they were planning an ambush to kill him on the way.Festus replied that Paul was being kept at Caesarea and that he himself intended to go there shortly.“ So,” said he,“ let the men of authority among you go down with me, and if there is anything wrong about the man, let them bring charges against him.”After he stayed among them not more than eight or ten days, he went down to Caesarea. And the next day he took his seat on the tribunal and ordered Paul to be brought.When he had arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many and serious charges against him that they could not prove.Paul argued in his defense,“ Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have I committed any offense.”But Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor, said to Paul,“ Do you wish to go up to Jerusalem and there be tried on these charges before me?”

Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah,“ No one of us shall give his daughter in marriage to Benjamin.”

for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly.

King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’ name had become known. Some said,“ John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.”

Then the king, when he heard these words, was much distressed and set his mind to deliver Daniel. And he labored till the sun went down to rescue him.Then these men came by agreement to the king and said to the king,“ Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians that no injunction or ordinance that the king establishes can be changed.”Then the king commanded, and Daniel was brought and cast into the den of lions. The king declared to Daniel,“ May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!”

And David said to Abigail,“ Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me!Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, who have kept me this day from bloodguilt and from working salvation with my own hand!For as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from hurting you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, truly by morning there had not been left to Nabal so much as one male.”

And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and said,“ If you will give the Ammonites into my hand,then whatever comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the Ammonites shall be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.”

Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few.

And the men of Israel had been hard pressed that day, so Saul had laid an oath on the people, saying,“ Cursed be the man who eats food until it is evening and I am avenged on my enemies.” So none of the people had tasted food.

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus,

And at the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow that he had made. She had never known a man, and it became a custom in Israel

What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the Lord that we will not give them any of our daughters for wives?”And they said,“ What one is there of the tribes of Israel that did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah?” And behold, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh-gilead, to the assembly.For when the people were mustered, behold, not one of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was there.So the congregation sent 12,000 of their bravest men there and commanded them,“ Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword; also the women and the little ones.This is what you shall do: every male and every woman that has lain with a male you shall devote to destruction.”And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead 400 young virgins who had not known a man by lying with him, and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.Then the whole congregation sent word to the people of Benjamin who were at the rock of Rimmon and proclaimed peace to them.And Benjamin returned at that time. And they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead, but they were not enough for them.And the people had compassion on Benjamin because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.Then the elders of the congregation said,“ What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?”And they said,“ There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, that a tribe not be blotted out from Israel.Yet we cannot give them wives from our daughters.” For the people of Israel had sworn,“ Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin.”So they said,“ Behold, there is the yearly feast of the Lord at Shiloh, which is north of Bethel, on the east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.”And they commanded the people of Benjamin, saying,“ Go and lie in ambush in the vineyardsand watch. If the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards and snatch each man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.And when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we will say to them,‘ Grant them graciously to us, because we did not take for each man of them his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.’”And the people of Benjamin did so and took their wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they carried off. Then they went and returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the towns and lived in them.

From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out,“ If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha.Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews,“ Behold your King!”They cried out,“ Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them,“ Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered,“ We have no king but Caesar.”So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus,

Then he gave orders to the centurion that he should be kept in custody but have some liberty, and that none of his friends should be prevented from attending to his needs.After some days Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, and he sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus.And as he reasoned about righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix was alarmed and said,“ Go away for the present. When I get an opportunity I will summon you.”At the same time he hoped that money would be given him by Paul. So he sent for him often and conversed with him.When two years had elapsed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus. And desiring to do the Jews a favor, Felix left Paul in prison.

Then one of the people said,“ Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying,‘ Cursed be the man who eats food this day.’” And the people were faint.
