Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. So Pilate came out to them and asked,“ What charges are you bringing against this man?”“ If he were not a criminal,” they replied,“ we would not have handed him over to you.”Pilate said,“ Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”“ But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?”“ Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked,“ or did others talk to you about me?”“ Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied.“ Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”Jesus said,“ My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”“ You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered,“ You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”“ What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said,“ I find no basis for a charge against him. (niv)

The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go.You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you.You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this.By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see. (niv)

So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor. When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders.“ I have sinned,” he said,“ for I have betrayed innocent blood.”“ What is that to us?” they replied.“ That’s your responsibility.”So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. The chief priests picked up the coins and said,“ It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.”So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:“ They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.” (niv)
