耶穌沿着加利利海邊行走，看見兩兄弟，就是那叫彼得的西門和他弟弟安得烈，正往海裏撒網；他們本是打魚的。耶穌對他們說：「來跟從我，我要叫你們得人如得魚一樣。」他們立刻捨了網，跟從他。耶穌從那裏往前走，看見另外兩兄弟，就是西庇太的兒子雅各和他弟弟約翰，同他們的父親西庇太在船上補網，耶穌就呼召他們。他們立刻捨了船，辭別父親，跟從了耶穌。

聽了約翰的話而跟從耶穌的那兩個人，其中一個是西門‧彼得的弟弟安得烈。他先找到自己的哥哥西門，對他說：「我們遇見彌賽亞了。」（「彌賽亞」翻出來就是基督。）於是安得烈領西門去見耶穌。耶穌看着他，說：「你是約翰的兒子西門，你要稱為磯法。」（「磯法」翻出來就是彼得。）

有一個門徒，就是西門‧彼得的弟弟安得烈，對耶穌說：

這十二個人有西門（耶穌又給他起名叫彼得），還有他弟弟安得烈，又有雅各和約翰，腓力和巴多羅買，

耶穌站在革尼撒勒湖邊，眾人擁擠他，要聽神的道。他見有兩隻船靠在湖邊，打魚的人卻離開船，洗網去了。有一隻船是西門的，耶穌就上去，請他把船撐開，稍微離岸，就坐下，在船上教導眾人。他講完了，對西門說：「把船開到水深的地方下網打魚。」西門說：「老師，我們整夜勞累，並沒有打着甚麼。但依從你的話，我就下網。」他們下了網，圈住許多魚，網險些裂開，就招手叫另一隻船上的同伴來幫助。他們就來，把魚裝滿了兩隻船，船甚至要沉下去。西門‧彼得看見，就俯伏在耶穌膝前，說：「主啊，離開我，我是個罪人。」他和一切跟他一起的人對打到了這一網的魚都很驚訝。他的夥伴西庇太的兒子雅各、約翰，也是這樣。耶穌對西門說：「不要怕！從今以後，你要得人了。」他們把兩隻船靠了岸，就撇下所有的，跟從了耶穌。

又有安得烈、腓力、巴多羅買、馬太、多馬、亞勒腓的兒子雅各、達太和激進黨的西門，

他們一進城，就上了所住的樓房；在那裏有彼得、約翰、雅各、安得烈、腓力、多馬、巴多羅買、馬太、亞勒腓的兒子雅各、激進黨的西門，和雅各的兒子猶大。

他設立的十二個人有西門－耶穌又給他起名叫彼得，
