The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.They blindfolded him and demanded,“ Prophesy! Who hit you?”And they said many other insulting things to him. (niv)

They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him.And they began to call out to him,“ Hail, king of the Jews!”Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him.And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. (niv)

They detest me and keep their distance; they do not hesitate to spit in my face. (niv)

They offered him wine vinegarand said,“ If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him:“ Aren’t you the Messiah? Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him.They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him.“ Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.They came to a place called Golgotha( which means“ the place of the skull”).There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.And sitting down, they kept watch over him there.Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their headsand saying,“ You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him.“ He saved others,” they said,“ but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said,‘ I am the Son of God.’”In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him. (niv)

Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate. (niv)

Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying,“ So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,come down from the cross and save yourself!”In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves.“ He saved others,” they said,“ but he can’t save himself! (niv)

Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me. (niv)

The high priest tore his clothes.“ Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. (niv)

The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robeand went up to him again and again, saying,“ Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face. (niv)

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (niv)

He answered,“ A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (niv)
