They said,“ Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”

“ Well, he permitted it,” they replied.“ He said a man can give his wife a written notice of divorce and send her away.”

They said,“ Moses permitted us to write divorce papers and send her away.”

「如果有人娶妻後，發覺妻子行為不檢，因而嫌棄她，他可以寫休書給她，讓她離開夫家。她離開後，可以自由再婚。如果她的後夫也嫌棄她，寫休書給她，讓她離開夫家，或者後夫死了，前夫不可再娶這已被玷污的女子，因為那是耶和華所憎惡的。你們切不可把這種罪惡帶到你們的上帝耶和華將要賜給你們的土地上。

「還有話說，『人若休妻，必須給她休書』。但我告訴你們，除非是妻子不貞，否則，休妻就是使妻子犯通姦罪，娶被休女子的人也犯了通姦罪。

約瑟是個義人，不願公開地羞辱她，便決定暗中和她解除婚約。

耶和華說：「如果丈夫休掉妻子，妻子離去另嫁別人，前夫怎會再娶她呢？那樣做豈不完全玷污了土地嗎？你曾與許多情人苟合，現在要歸向我嗎？

耶和華說：「我休你們母親的休書在哪裡呢？我把你們賣給了我哪一個債主呢？你們被賣是因為你們的罪惡，你們母親被休是因為你們的過犯。

他們追問：「那麼，為什麼摩西說，只要給妻子休書，就可以休她呢？」
