原來希律、為了他兄弟腓力的妻子希羅底的緣故、曾把約翰抓住，給捆綁了，下在監裏；因為約翰屢次對他說：『你娶了這婦人是不合法的。』希律雖然想要殺他，卻懼怕民眾，因為他們都以約翰為神言人。到了希律的生日，希羅底的女兒在眾人中間跳舞，得了希律的歡心。因此希律用起誓的話公然應許，凡她所求的、都要給她。她被母親指使了，就說：『請把施洗者約翰的頭，就在此地放在盤子裏給我。』王很憂愁，只因有了起誓的話和一同坐席的人，就發命令要給；於是打發人、在監裏把約翰斬首了。把他的頭放在盤子裏，拿了來，給那閨女；閨女就拿去給她母親。約翰的門徒上前來，把屍體領去，埋葬了；又去報告耶穌。
