Then they asked Jesus,“ Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah has to come first?”Jesus replied,“ That’s right. Elijah does come first. He makes all things new again. So why is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and not be accepted?I tell you, Elijah has come. They have done to him everything they wanted to do. They did it just as it is written about him.”

“ I will send the prophet Elijah to you. He will come before the day of the Lord arrives. It will be a great and terrifying day.

He said to his attendants,“ This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead! That is why he has the power to do miracles.”

Now Herod, the ruler of Galilee, heard about everything that was going on. He was bewildered, because some were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the dead.Others were saying that Elijah had appeared. Still others were saying that a prophet of long ago had come back to life.But Herod said,“ I had John’s head cut off. So who is it that I hear such things about?” And he tried to see Jesus.

They replied,“ Some say John the Baptist. Others say Elijah. Still others say Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”

King Herod heard about this. Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying,“ John the Baptist has been raised from the dead! That is why he has the power to do miracles.”Others said,“ He is Elijah.” Still others claimed,“ He is a prophet. He is like one of the prophets of long ago.”But when Herod heard this, he said,“ I had John’s head cut off. And now he has been raised from the dead!”
