我的百姓啊，當記念從前摩押王巴勒如何籌算，比珥的兒子巴蘭如何回應他，當記念從什亭到吉甲所發生的事，好使你們明白耶和華公義的作為。」

王回答他們說：『我實在告訴你們，這些事你們做在我弟兄中一個最小的身上，就是做在我身上了。』

任憑他們咒罵，你卻要賜福；他們幾時起來就必蒙羞，你的僕人卻要歡喜。

那時，摩押王西撥的兒子巴勒起來攻擊以色列人，派人去召比珥的兒子巴蘭來詛咒你們。但我不願聽巴蘭，所以他反而為你們連連祝福。這樣，我救了你們脫離他的手。

巴蘭唱起詩歌說：「巴勒啊，起來，聽；西撥的兒子啊，側耳聽我。

摩押因以色列百姓這麼多，非常懼怕。摩押因以色列人的緣故就憂懼。摩押對米甸的長老說：「現在這羣人要舔盡我們四圍的一切，好像牛舔盡田間的草一樣。」那時，西撥的兒子巴勒作摩押王。他派使者往大河附近的毗奪去，到比珥的兒子巴蘭的家鄉，召巴蘭來，說：「看哪，有一羣百姓從埃及出來；看哪，他們遮滿地面，住在我的對面。現在請你來，為我詛咒這百姓，因為他們比我強大，或許我能打敗他們，把他們趕出此地。因為我知道，你為誰祝福，誰就得福；你詛咒誰，誰就受詛咒。」摩押的長老和米甸的長老手裏拿着占卜的禮金到巴蘭那裏，將巴勒的話告訴他。巴蘭對他們說：「今晚你們在這裏過夜，我必照着耶和華向我說的話給你們答覆。」摩押的官員就在巴蘭那裏住下。神臨到巴蘭那裏，說：「你這裏的這些人是誰？」巴蘭對神說：「摩押王西撥的兒子巴勒送信給我：『看哪，從埃及出來的百姓遮滿了地面，現在請你來，為我詛咒他們，或許我能打敗他們，把他們趕走。』」

雅各啊，你的帳棚何等華美！以色列啊，你的帳幕何其華麗！如連綿的山谷，如河畔的園子，如耶和華栽種的沉香樹，又如水邊的香柏木。水要從他的桶裏流出，種子要撒在多水之處。他的王必超越亞甲，他的國必要振興。神領他出埃及，為他有如野牛的角。他要吞滅那敵對他的國，壓碎他們的骨頭，用箭射透他們。他蹲如公獅，臥如母獅，誰敢惹他？凡為你祝福的，願他蒙福；凡詛咒你的，願他受詛咒。」巴勒向巴蘭怒氣發作，就緊握拳頭。巴勒對巴蘭說：「我召你來詛咒我的仇敵，看哪，你竟然這三次為他們祝福。

神沒有詛咒的，我焉能詛咒？耶和華沒有怒罵的，我豈能怒罵？我從磐石的巔峯看到他，我從山丘望見他。看哪，這是獨居的民，不算在列國中。誰能數點雅各的塵土？誰能計算以色列的塵沙？我願如正直人之死而死；我願如正直人之終而終。」巴勒對巴蘭說：「你向我做的是甚麼呢？我帶你來詛咒我的仇敵，看哪，你竟為他們祝福。」
