But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they jeered at us and despised us and said,“ What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?”

But when Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem the Arab heard of our plan, they scoffed contemptuously.“ What are you doing? Are you rebelling against the king?” they asked.

But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard all this, they derided us and expressed contempt toward us. They said,“ What is this you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?”

But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite servant, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they ridiculed us, and despised us, and said,“ What is this thing that you are doing? Will you rebel against the king?”

in which was written:“ It is reported among the nations— and Geshem says it is true— that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king (niv)

You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us. (niv)

But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. (niv)

When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it— though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates—Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message:“ Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the plain of Ono.” But they were scheming to harm me; (niv)

And they began to accuse him, saying,“ We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king.” (niv)

so that a search may be made in the archives of your predecessors. In these records you will find that this city is a rebellious city, troublesome to kings and provinces, a place with a long history of sedition. That is why this city was destroyed.We inform the king that if this city is built and its walls are restored, you will be left with nothing in Trans-Euphrates. (niv)

We are objects of contempt to our neighbors, of scorn and derision to those around us. (niv)

“ We have found this man to be a troublemaker, stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect (niv)
